Mom of Daunte Wright’s girlfriend says ‘racist cops’ caused daughter’s broken jaw on night he was killed

Ten days after criminal suspect Daunte Wright was shot and killed by police while trying to flee, accidentally according to the Brooklyn Center Police Department, the media is reporting that Wright’s girlfriend had her jaw broken during the incident.

A tidbit of information that apparently escaped notice in the exhaustive coverage of the shooting, and escaped the attention of race hustlers like U.S. Rep. Maxine Waters, D-Calif., and Al Sharpton, who rushed to Minnesota to help enflame emotions ahead of this week’s verdict in former Minneapolis police officer Derek Chauvin’s trial.

Wright’s girlfriend, Alayna Albrecht-Payton, was in the car when he broke away from several police officers as they tried to handcuff him for an outstanding warrant related to misdemeanor charges of illegally possessing a firearm and fleeing from police. Wright jumped back in his vehicle and was shot by an officer who seemingly grabbed her service weapon mistakenly instead of her Taser — the officer is heard on body-cam video yelling, “Taser, Taser” before firing, which is part of their training to let officers know a Taser shot is imminent.

The girl’s mother, Danielle Albrecht, said on a GoFundMe page titled, “Alayna jaw broke by cop in Daunte Wrights killing,” that her daughter’s jaw was broken in what she described as a “brutal attack.”

Explaining on the page that her daughter has to have surgery, Albrecht left no room for doubt that the police were responsible for the injury. It’s not clear what interaction Albrecht-Payton may have had with police — released body-cam footage doesn’t show her outside the vehicle.

“Alayna did NOTHING to deserve this!” the mother wrote on the page. “ This kind of treatment is sick its disgusting its inhumane! Protect and Serve? Isn’t that what the police are supposed to do? Sadly they don’t and sadly more lives continue to be lost!”

She was equally clear that police are racist.

“Alayna watched as her boyfriend was murdered in front of her by police and then she herself was brutally attacked! The trauma my daughter has suffered could have been avoided! Enough is enough! Too many mothers have lost their children because of the racist cops in our country!  There must be JUSTICE!” she added.

As of this writing, in the seven days the GoFundMe campaign has been active, it has collected $1,750 from 50 donors out of a stated goal of $20,000.

Attorney Robert Bennet, who is representing the family, said Albrecht-Payton’s jaw was wired shut as a result of her injuries, according to WCCO-TV. He also said she suffered from the emotional trauma of witnessing her boyfriend’s violent death.

Stating that legal action would be forthcoming, Bennet said he’s requested all body-worn camera footage of Albrecht-Payton’s interactions with officers.

Brooklyn Center police officer Kim Potter, the white 26-year-veteran of the force who shot Wright, an African-American, has since been charged with one count of second-degree manslaughter in his death. She was booked into the Hennepin County Jail but released after posting a $100,000 bond, according to the CBS affiliate.
