House Speaker Nancy Pelosi was slammed on Tuesday after she offensively thanked George Floyd for “sacrificing your life for justice” following the conviction of former Minneapolis Police officer Derek Chauvin for his death.
Pelosi wasted no time in doing a photo-op with the Congressional Black Caucus immediately following the verdict. She dramatically gazed at the sky and proclaimed, “Thank you, George Floyd, for sacrificing your life for justice.”
“For being there to call out to your mom,” Pelosi intoned. “How heartbreaking was that? [To] call out for your mom, ‘I can’t breathe.'”
“But because of you and because of thousands, millions of people around the world who came out for justice, your name will always be synonymous with justice,” the speaker opportunistically stated.

Pelosi would later attempt to clarify her comments on Twitter: “George Floyd should be alive today. His family’s calls for justice for his murder were heard around the world. He did not die in vain,” Pelosi wrote. “We must make sure other families don’t suffer the same racism, violence & pain, and we must enact the George Floyd #JusticeInPolicing Act.”
The weak attempt at walking back some of her previous comments did not appear to placate anyone on social medial.

She acknowledged that she had spoken to Floyd’s family at approximately 3 p.m. on Tuesday to thank and bless them for their “grace and dignity.” President Biden had similarly spoken to the family and had stated that he was “praying” for the “right verdict” in the trial.
Congressional Black Caucus Chairwoman Joyce Beatty, who is a Democratic congresswoman from Ohio, vowed that the group would continue working toward police reform: “We will fight continuously for all of those who died or have been injured senselessly by law enforcement,” she declared.
Many were simply appalled at Pelosi’s reaction to the verdict. There was widespread condemnation for Pelosi implying that Floyd was somehow willing to die at the hands of the police in the name of justice.
She infuriated those on the left who pointed to the fact that she had been in office for three decades and at age 81, is worth in excess of $114 million. They were stunned that she could make such an out-of-touch statement after being in office for so long.
Pelosi was ripped on both sides of the political aisle for her tone-deaf remarks.
University of Illinois history professor and black activist Barbara Ransby was shocked by Pelosi’s bizarre speech: “Did Pelosi just say ‘George Floyd, thank u 4 sacrificing your life for justice’?” she tweeted in disbelief. “He did not SACRIFICE his life. His life was violently taken.”
Media and political consultant Timothy Burke, who is a former writer for Deadspin and the Daily Beast, labeled Pelosi’s comments as “absolutely bizarre.”
Others followed suit:
“Why do they keep putting her out in public?” tweeted one commenter. Another called Pelosi an “absolute ghoul.”
“So far out of touch she doesn’t even qualify for the Hall and Oates song anymore,” added yet another.
Another enraged commenter tweeted: “My God the ignorance of Pelosi. This is really a good indication of why we need term limits because her old ass is out of her damn mind. ‘Sacrificing himself’… like he had a choice..”
And the anger over Pelosi’s comments just kept growing and spreading on social media:
If I'm ever killed, please don't let Nancy Pelosi thank me for dying

Conflating "being murdered" for "sacrificing your life" is the sort of statement you make when you have no skin in the game and eager to return to peaceable status quo ASAP https://t.co/eulKRLi9o8

No. This is not it. Black people are not sacrificial lambs. He was killed because of injustice not as a symbol of anything. He was a human. A man. A father. A brother. Let’s not do this.

This type of lunacy is what happens when you view people as nothing but pawns for your cause https://t.co/hZR5Ny3crl
