‘COVID internment camps’: ‘You think that couldn’t happen in America? It just happened in Canada.’

Fox News host Tucker Carlson ripped the Canadian government for its COVID-19 quarantine policy that essentially forces all citizens into what he called “internment camps” for periods of time, while speculating that a similar concept could be adopted in the U.S.

“What if your next-door neighbor suddenly went dangerously insane and started holding people hostage in his house? Would you consider that threatening? Would you even notice it? These aren’t theoretical questions. Something very much like that just happened in our national neighborhood,” Carlson said to kick off his opening monologue on Wednesday.

“Canada — the landmass directly to our north and our single largest trading partner, the country with whom we share the longest international border in the world — Canada took a dramatic move toward legitimately dangerous authoritarianism. In Canada, yes,” he added.

Carlson explained that Canadian Prime Minister Justin Trudeau recently implemented new coronavirus rules for Canadians returning from abroad, noting they have to get a COVID test before and after takeoff.

“If your test results come back positive, you’ll need to immediately quarantine in designated government facilities. This is not optional,” Carlson quoted Trudeau as saying.

“‘Designated government facilities.’ When this happens in other countries, and it does, we call those facilities  internment camps,” Carlson continued. “Because this is Canada we’re talking about, a place we assume is passive and polite and Anglo to the point of parody, no one thinks to use that term. In fact, no one seems to think about it at all.”

Carlson said the policy has been in place for about a month but that it hasn’t gotten much attention in the U.S. media, though it should, he suggested, because it is so unorthodox for Canada.

“Suddenly, Canada is a flagrant violator of the most basic human rights. Fail a COVID test and they’ll lock you up without trial. Go ahead and try to disobey,” the host said, noting that people who attempt to avoid “detention” face a $1 million fine and three years behind bars.

Carlson went on to describe the “approved quarantine hotels” as lacking basics like food and water as well as security, noting that several of them held people without providing any provisions, including Canadians with preexisting medical conditions like diabetes.

He also recounted stories from Canadians who described their experience with quarantine in harrowing terms, such as being taken away by authorities and being told nothing until they arrived at a hotel.

“Just don’t call it jail. That’s an order, directly from Canadian state media,” Carlson said. “This fall, the CBC (Canadian Broadcasting Company) ran a story with this headline: ‘PM, health officials warn Canadians against believing COVID-19 ‘internment camps’ disinformation.’ Warn them against believing – sound familiar?”

Later in the segment, Carlson played a clip of Trudeau saying that the COVID-19 pandemic “has provided an opportunity for a reset” of “economic systems” and other elements of society.

He then segued into comments made by Biden administration Climate Czar John Kerry, who said something similar.

“‘Yes, it [the Great Reset] will happen,’ Kerry said, ‘and I think it will happen with greater speed and with greater intensity than a lot of people might imagine. In effect, the citizens of the United States have just done a Great Reset. We’ve done a Great Reset. And it was a record level of voting. We’re at the dawn of an extremely exciting time,’” Carlson noted.

“Has it been extremely exciting for you?” he asked.

“For power-mad leaders hoping to eliminate centuries of constitutional restraints on their own ambitions, it is indeed an exciting time. Could what’s happening in Canada happen here? That’s the question…You might not think so,” he added. “We don’t need internment cells, because unlike Canada, we have the vaccine, and we’re distributing it to tens of millions of people. Once you’re vaccinated, you can live your life normally.”

The host then showed a clip of Sen. Ted Cruz (R-Texas) recently interacting with a reporter who asked him to put on a mask. Cruz refused, noting that he and the other senators around him have all been vaccinated so they are immune. Carlson suggested the reporter is like a lot of would-be authoritarians in the U.S. who would like to adopt Canada’s quarantines.

You see that reporter and you realize that person badly wants Ted Cruz tossed into the back of a black van for coronavirus noncompliance. And not just Ted Cruz, but you, too. In fact, all the disobedient, politically inconvenient people should be held without trial (on public health grounds, of course) until they no longer pose a mortal threat to the rest of us. And by ‘the rest of us,’ of course, we mean the good people, the people who obey,” said Carlson.

“Think that couldn’t happen here? Why, because the Constitution prohibits it?” Carlson questioned. “You think that couldn’t happen in America? It just happened in Canada.”
