Former House Speaker Newt Gingrich railed against Democrats pushing to cancel Dr. Seuss, lower the federal voting age to 16, and quickly enact legislation that will radically change the political direction of the country.
His comments during a Wednesday segment on Fox News’ “Tucker Carlson Tonight” came on the heels of the House passing H.R. 1, a sweeping voting reform bill critics have blasted as an overly invasive move by Democrats to federalize ballot rules that led to so much chaos and distrust during the November election cycle.
One of the amendments pushed by the party’s extreme left would have lowered the federal voting age from 18 to 16. In offering the amendment, Rep. Ayanna Pressley (D-Mass.) claimed it is necessary to “enfranchise young Americans.”
Rep. @AyannaPressley: "My amendment gets to the heart of H.R. 1 and recognizes the contributions that young people continue to make to our democracy. By lowering the federal voting age from 18 to 16 years of age, my amendment would enfranchise young Americans." pic.twitter.com/83xaBB6NRD

As he began the segment Wednesday, Carlson noted that President Joe Biden came into office promising unity, but during his first weeks in office he has instead pushed policies that “polls show are unpopular and deeply divisive.”

Carlson then ticked off policies Biden has implemented, including relaxation of former President Donald Trump’s border and immigration enforcement, allowing biological men to compete in women’s sports, and providing relief to American farmers based on skin color.
He then pushed back on the voting changes sought by most Democrats, including lowering the voting age to 16 that “no sane person wants,” adding that one GOP lawmaker noted Democrats don’t want 16- and 17-year-olds charged as adults or have guns, “but they can choose the president.”
As he brought in Gingrich, a former Georgia GOP lawmaker, Carlson asked why Biden and Democrats are pushing “the most divisive policies upfront.”
Gingrich responded by noting that Biden has “lived through two Democratic disasters,” including the party’s historic loss of its 40-year House majority when Gingrich became speaker in 1994 and loss of 63 House seats in 2010, again handing the majority to Republicans.
He went on to speculate that Democrats are engaged “in a very calculating, and I think cynical, ploy” to push their agenda quickly while they still control Congress.
“They’ve given up on keeping the House. What they’re doing is ramming through everything they can get done before they lose in 2022,” the former GOP leader said. “This is kind of a sprint to radicalism.”
He went on to say that “30 to 40” House Democrats who are voting for the leftist measures will not be able to defend their votes to their constituents when they are up for reelection in less than two years.
“I think that the Biden-Harris model is, we’re gonna lose the House anyway, we might as well grab everything we can while we’ve got the power,” Gingrich continued, adding that the $1.9 trillion COVID spending bill “contains more radicalism in it” than both terms of former Presidents Bill Clinton and Barack Obama.
Carlson responded by questioning why several problematic issues are being enabled or ignored by the Biden administration and congressional Democrats, such as weakening U.S. energy production and allowing COVID-positive illegal aliens to be released into the country.
“They don’t want to protect your America. They want to create an alternative America,” Gingrich said. “They really despise America.”
