Stephen Miller: ‘Self-inflicted’ public health crisis brewing at border after Biden took away ‘tools’ of enforcement

Former senior White House adviser Stephen Miller panned President Joe Biden’s raft of executive orders loosening immigration and border enforcement on Thursday, predicting that the result will be a “self-inflicted” crisis in public health.

Miller, who helped craft former President Donald Trump’s border policies, told “Fox & Friends” that collectively, Biden had taken away most of the “tools” immigration and border agencies need in order to uphold immigration law.

To begin the segment, co-host Brian Kilmeade noted that the Biden administration has ordered the construction of a “tent city” in Donna, Texas, to handle a dramatic influx of illegal border crossers. According to the U.S. Border Patrol, he noted, apprehensions have skyrocketed more than 152 percent comparing January 2020 and January 2021.

“It’s even worse than that,” Miller said in response. “Under our policies, they were being caught and they were being safely returned to their home countries. Under this president, many of them are being released directly into U.S. communities untested, unmasked, many of them have COVID.”

“It’s a self-inflicted public health crisis and the reason is simple,” Miller continued. “We created the tools to end ‘catch-and-release.’ In two weeks, Biden has eliminated those tools.”

Miller went on to say that some of Biden’s executive orders have “canceled” arrangements the Trump administration negotiated with Mexico and some Central American countries to take in migrants and work to alleviate conditions that cause migrants to flee their homes.

“He’s gotten rid of regulations we put in place to turn away fraudulent asylum seekers,” Miller continued. “He’s taken away from the Border Patrol the basic tools they need to keep this country safe. That’s why you’re seeing what you’re seeing.”

Kilmeade then circled back to the tent facility put in place by the administration, noting that already there are more than 700 migrant children who were led across the border without being accompanied by a parent.

“We’ve seen this movie before, it was totally preventable. It was something that happened during the Obama administration,” the host said, asking Miller to respond.

“It’s tragic, and it’s heartbreaking, and it’s completely preventable,” the former top Trump adviser said. “We had a policy in place when we left to safely and humanely return illegal immigrant minors to their families in their home countries.

“It saved lives it kept children safe, and it put coyotes and smugglers out of business,” Miller added.

Former Trump Homeland Security officials, as well as local law enforcement near the border, have been raising their voices over concerns that Biden’s increasingly lax border policies will harm Americans.

“The memo that I received this last week — it’s a defunding-ICE-by-memo — memorandum, sent out January 20, 2021,” Jackson County Sheriff A. J. Louderback told Fox News’ Tucker Carlson Tuesday.

“This is a particularly devastating document for Texans and Americans here in the United States,” he continued. “When I read it and looked at it, it’s a message to the world that you can come here illegally, you can commit crimes here against Americans, and remain illegally.”

Miller agreed, noting that Biden’s policies are amounting to “100 percent release” of minors caught sneaking into the country while endangering their lives as well.

“What that does is it sends thousands and thousands and thousands more minors into the hands of cartels, coyotes, and smugglers where they will be horribly abused,” he said.

“This is completely and entirely needless,” Miller added.
