In what was apparently meant to be an objective report, The New York Times speculated this Saturday that President Joe Biden may “perhaps” be “the most religiously observant commander in chief in half a century.”
A servant of what, exactly? Of something called “liberal Christianity,” according to the Times.
“Mr. Biden, perhaps the most religiously observant commander in chief in half a century, regularly attends Mass and speaks of how his Catholic faith grounds his life and his policies,” the paper reported.
“And with Mr. Biden, a different, more liberal Christianity is ascendant: less focused on sexual politics and more on combating poverty, climate change and racial inequality.”
Measuring roughly 1,200 words long, the whole piece centers on portraying the new president as some sort of heroic figure who’s emerged as the champion of a better Christianity that “reflect[s] values that progressive [activists] have pushed for.”
There’s just one problem with this line of thinking. There’s no such thing as “liberal Christianity” — there’s just Christianity.
There isn’t a “liberal Christianity.” There’s just Christianity.

Hmm: “liberal Christianity” eh? https://t.co/iZnKBEihzF

There is no such thing as “liberal Christianity” or even “Conservative Christianity” there is just Christianity. Anything else is of Satan. https://t.co/sNSmSCe3lk

And it just so happens that many of Christianity’s core tenets directly contradict the “principles” and “precepts” of contemporary liberalism, which is why liberal activists who identify as Christian are intent on changing the religion itself. In fact, they’re even trying to get rid of the objective term “Christian voters.”
“When people say ‘Christian voters’ they mean white people and they mean conservatives. ‘Christian voters’ is a very alienating term. … I don’t feel like I’m a part of that, even though I’m Christian,” left-wing Christian activist Natalie Harwood complained to PBS back in the summer of 2019.
Harwood’s a Christian who at the time worked at Planned Parenthood and was a “diehard fan” of then-Democrat presidential candidate Bernie Sanders.
She’s not too dissimilar from Biden, who too supports abortion and has closely aligned himself with Sen. Sanders and his radical agenda.
Another reminder of why the NY Times doesn’t have a comics page. It would be redundant. What an absurd premise: The pretend, pro-partial-birth-abortion Catholic is the most observant president. So silly https://t.co/zy86HdYBVE

Both she and Biden are starkly different from former Presidents George W. Bush, a Republican, and Jimmy Carter, a Democrat. Besides being devout adherents of Christianity — not “liberal Christianity” — both men are also staunch opponents of abortion.
“I have never believed that Jesus would be in favor of abortion, unless it was the result of rape or incest, or the mother’s life was in danger,” Carter said in 2018.
He stayed out of the way of pro-abortion activists during his time in office only because Roe v. Wade had been decided just four years before his presidency began.
“My oath of office was to obey the Constitution and the laws of this country as interpreted as the Supreme Court, so I went along with that,” he said.
Fair enough. In Biden’s case, he intends to be pro-active in pushing for abortion, not stymieing it. Only days into his presidency, he’s already revoked the Trump-era Mexico City Policy that had prevented the federal government from providing money to non-governmental organization that are linked to abortion.
It’s not clear how this makes him “the most religiously observant commander in chief in half a century,” especially when you factor in just how impressively devout Bush and Carter happen to be:
George W Bush said Jesus Christ was his favorite philosopher and credited Billy Graham with changing his life. Jimmy Carter taught Sunday School. Cmon. https://t.co/yDy60KjOs5

I think it is fair to say that Biden is sincere in a version of liberal Christianity, but the most religiously observant in a half century? Not even the most religiously observant liberal in that stretch (Carter). https://t.co/iHqqLaSGCr

The tragic irony of the Times’ extremely dubious reporting is that it wasn’t too long ago that both the paper and other notoriously left-wing media outlets were attacking Christians for being devout.
When then-President Donald Trump nominated current current Supreme Court Justice Amy Coney Barrett to the U.S. Court of Appeals for the Seventh Circuit in 2017, the Times promptly pounced with a fear-mongering piece about her faith.
And then when the president nominated Barrett to the Supreme Court last year, the left-wing media pounced even more ferociously:

— Mary Margaret Olohan (@MaryMargOlohan) January 24, 2021
Lest we forget, the media roundly mocked Amy Coney Barrett’s Catholicism. Her adherence to Catholic principle was used to suggest that she was unfit to be a Supreme Court justice. People suggested her large family was extreme and that she adopted her children for show.

And don’t forget the incessant smears and attacks that former Vice President Mike Pence, a truly devout Christian, faced for four years straight.
To hear the left tell it, devout Christians like Pence were intent on transforming America into a Christian theocracy.
He’s more religiously observant than the Republicans you told us were turning the country into a Christian theocracy? https://t.co/WuTefOM8Wl
— Seth Mandel (@SethAMandel) January 24, 2021
Of course, that was never true. What is true, though, is that the left is intent on using ostensibly devout Christians like Joe Biden to transform Christianity into something it has never been and never will be.
