An armed man who tried to rob a cell phone store in a Chicago neighborhood where residents have grown fed-up with all the crime wound up dead and deceased Saturday after a legal concealed carry permit owner popped him in the chest.
The shooting occurred around 7:00 pm on the 3400 hundred block of West Chicago Avenue in Humboldt Park, according to local station WFLD.
“According to police, a man walked into this Metro by T-Mobile store armed with a gun, demanding items. Police say another man then pulled out his own gun, firing shots at the attempted robber,” WFLD reporter Nate Rodgers reported from the scene.
“The suspect was struck in the chest and transported to Stroger Hospital, where he remains in critical condition,” Rodgers added.
The unidentified suspect was announced dead shortly thereafter.
According to locals, it appears crime is a feature — not a bug — of this neighborhood.
“There in fact is an entire shopping center directly across the street from this phone store. The area is becoming more populated with businesses. Carl Smith says that lately he’s heard a lot of gunfire in the community,” Rodgers reported.
Speaking with Rodgers, Smith said that in recent days “they’ve attempted to rob the Dunkin Donuts” and “they’ve attempted to rob a couple stores over here in the mall.”
“So I mean, desperate times call for desperate measures, and people will try anything sometimes, and it’s sad. This is not an everyday thing, but every now and again it does happen,” he added.

What remains unknown are the identities of the suspect and the shooter, and whether or not the shooter might face any charges.
“The police tell us that the guy who intervened did have a concealed carry license. But still some unanswered questions for police. We’re still not sure if the guy who intervened, if he was the store owner, if he was just a witness inside the store, if he worked there at the time or if he was just another customer,” Rodgers reported.
However, in its own report, CBS-affiliated local station WBBM confirmed that the shooter is a “29-year-old store employee,” that two guns were recovered from the crime scene and that four detectives are investigating the case.
Because of the predominance of left-wing ideologues in Chicago’s criminal justice system, there is a chance the shooter might be charged with something.
This past summer the owner of another cellphone store in Humboldt Park was hit with a gun charge after he used a gun with a defaced serial number to shoot and kill a man who’d tried to rob his store. He was not, however, hit with a murder charge.
Another local business owner, Mohammed Ma’ali, 33, died as he tried to defend himself during a robbery last February.
“Four robbers entered his Park Manor convenience store and demanded the cash drawer Friday around 1:45 p.m., police said. Ma’ali was armed and tried to defend himself. Gunfire was exchanged, and Ma’ali was hit at close range,” WBBM reported at the time.

While rampant criminality has been a staple of Chicago for years, the coronavirus pandemic and George Floyd riots have caused the crime to spike to levels not seen in decades.
“A hardworking father killed just before 1 a.m. A West Side high school student murdered two hours later. A man killed amid South Side looting at a cellphone store at 12:30 p.m. A college freshman who hoped to become a correctional officer, gunned down at 4:25 p.m. after getting into an argument in Englewood,” Chicago Sun-Times reported on June 8th.
“While Chicago was roiled by another day of protests and looting in the wake of George Floyd’s murder, 18 people were killed Sunday, May 31, making it the single most violent day in Chicago in six decades, according to the University of Chicago Crime Lab.”
The crime has yet to abate. By Saturday, six had already been killed and 17 hurt this weekend. On Wednesday, 13 were shot. On Monday, 11 were shot, 3 fatally.
In Humboldt Park, the home of the Metro by T-Mobile store, a 19-year-old was murdered Thursday, and a 15-year-old boy was wounded Wednesday.
“About 3:10 p.m., the teen was standing on the sidewalk in the 1200 block of North Washtenaw Avenue when an unknown person pulled out a handgun and fired shots. … He was struck in the lower back and transported to Stroger Hospital in serious condition, police said,” the Sun-Times reported.
Seemingly random crimes like this are becoming a staple in other Democrat-controlled cities, including New York City.
Earlier this month in Brooklyn, an armed thug just waltzed up to a random car and opened fire, nearly killing the mother sitting in the passenger seat.
“Surveillance footage captured the shooter as he blasted round after round through the driver’s side window near the corner of Wyona St. and Pitkin Ave. in East New York Dec. 13. The 31-year-old victim, who was sitting in the passenger seat, was hit twice in the arm. The driver, a 27-year-old man, was unscathed,” the New York Daily News reported.
