Rep. Maxine Waters rejected black voters who have cast ballots for President Donald Trump or plan to, telling a talk show host she “will never ever” forgive them.
In an interview with SiriusXM host Joe Madison to discuss the approaching election, Waters, 82, made it clear she could not understand how any black American could vote for the president.
She also riffed on “black young men who think somehow they can align themselves with Trump.”
“It just hurts me so bad to see blacks talking about supporting Trump,” she said. “I don’t know why they would be doing it. I don’t know what’s on their minds.”
Waters, a frequent critic of the president who has called on her supporters to harass and even physically intervene against members of President Trump’s Cabinet, claimed if he is reelected the country will suffer permanent damage.
She also launched into a name-calling tirade, slandering the president with impunity.
“The divisiveness that this deplorable human being has caused, the confrontation, the dog-whistling to the right wing, the white supremacists, the KKK, and they are coming alive,” she said. “They are emboldened because they’ve got a leader.”
The president has repeatedly denounced white supremacists and racism as well as groups like the KKK, which was founded immediately following the Civil War by Confederate secessionists who supported the Democratic Party.
The party also backed slavery before the war as well as segregation and Jim Crow laws in the century thereafter.
Waters then accused Trump, again, of being a racist who does not have an “appreciation for black people” and “black women in particular.”
“He has no respect for us,” she added. “He is not doing anything for us. For those black young men who think somehow they can align themselves with Trump, not only are they terribly mistaken, any of them showing their face, I will never, ever forgive them for undermining the possibility to help their own people and their own communities.”
In recent weeks, a number of high-profile black men including rappers 50cent, L’il Wayne, and Waka Flocka, have publicly voiced support for President Trump.
Nevertheless, Waters claimed that a black vote for Trump is “unconscionable” because he will never listen to black voices.
“Black men who don’t understand if they’re not listening to you, if they’re not listening to our voices, they have a price to pay,” she said.
“The years to come, if they help put Trump over, and help him get elected, they will go down in history as having done the most despicable thing to their families, and to their communities, and to their mothers and their grandmothers,” Waters railed.
“They will shamefully be accused of having attributed to the lack of equality for life for the people they claim to love so much,” said the California Democrat, who has also called Trump’s Cabinet members a “bunch of scumbags.”
Blacks supporting the president disagree.
“Besides what he’s done so far with criminal reform, the Platinum Plan is going to give the community real ownership,” L’il Wayne said last week. “He listened to what we had to say today and assured he will and can get it done.”
The rapper was referencing the First Step Act signed by the president that includes prison and sentencing reforms long pursued by liberals but which nonetheless got short shrift during the Obama administration.
He also referenced a plan the president introduced last month to invest $500 billion in black communities over the next several years, while making lynching a federal crime and designating Antifa and the KKK as terrorist groups.
The plan also makes Juneteenth, the date slavery officially ended in the United States, a federal holiday.
“For decades, Democrat politicians like Joe Biden have taken black voters for granted. They made you big promises before every election—and then the moment they got to Washington, they abandoned you and sold you out,” President Trump said in unveiling his plan during a speech at the Black Economic Empowerment Conference in Atlanta
“The Democrats will always take black voters for granted until large numbers of black Americans vote Republican,” he added.
