How times change …
Three years ago, Democrats and their media allies relentlessly slammed President Donald Trump for allegedly bungling his administration’s response to Hurricane Maria.
To hear them tell it, the president was responsible for every Puerto Rican who died as a result of the hurricane. If this refrain sounds familiar, it’s because it’s the same one they’ve adopted amid the ongoing coronavirus pandemic.
Yet despite the left’s insistence that Trump had failed — and that he’d done so purposefully because he “hates brown people” — Puerto Rico Gov. Wanda Vázquez Garced, a brown woman, has endorsed him, el presidente, for the 2020 race.
“I ask all Puerto Ricans who are listening to go vote. They have to go to vote, exercise their right to vote and evaluate who has represented being a person who thinks about Puerto Ricans and their needs at the most difficult moment. It is Donald Trump,” she reportedly said this week in an interview with Telemundo.
To be fair, she’s a Republican.
Last year, the president made headlines again as it pertains to Puerto Rico by posting tweets slamming the island state for its rampant corruption:

He wasn’t wrong, as the evidence has shown time and time again. Just earlier this year, in fact, the authorities found a warehouse full of emergency supplies that had never been delivered during Hurricane Maria in 2017 because of corruption.

In the tweet above, Turning Point USA founder Charlie Kirk referenced “despicable politicians” like San Juan Mayor Carmen Yulín Cruz, a Democrat who’d joined the media in smearing the president even as he tried diligently in 2017 to help her constituents.
Regardless, Washington Rep. Denny Heck responded to the president’s tweets last year by accusing him of hating “brown people.”
“The president simply hates brown people, especially if they happen to speak another language,” he said on CNN.

The president “hates brown people” so much that last month he announced an additional $13 billion in disaster aid to Puerto Rico, and this month the state’s governor has endorsed him.
By the way, after taking office last year, she made combating corruption a priority for her administration:
Responding to Vázquez’s endorsement this week, Republican National Committee officials said it’s “further proof” of his support among Latinos.
“Governor Wanda Vázquez Garced’s endorsement is further proof of the enthusiasm that President Trump is generating among Boricuas and all Hispanics. Unlike Joe Biden, whose policies destroyed the island’s economy and sent its pharmaceutical industry to China, President Trump is making record investments to support our fellow Americans on the island and uplift Hispanic communities,” they said.
Democrat presidential nominee Joe Biden’s campaign has meanwhile reportedly called the endorsement by Garced, a brown woman, a “desperate political stunt to win over Puerto Rican supporters.”
“For the thousands of families who had to leave the island, for all those we’ve lost, for those who still struggle every day to keep a roof over their heads and food on the table, it is three years too little and too late,” a campaign advisor reportedly said in a statement.
But that doesn’t appear to be how Puerto Ricans themselves feel.
“Biden thinks so little of Boricuas that he believes that by playing ‘Despacito’ we will forget how his horrible policies hurt Puerto Ricans,” Juan Carlos Benitez, a Latinos for Trump board member who’s Puerto Rican, reportedly said this week.
“But Hispanics have not forgotten how Biden presided over the most ‘despacito’ economic growth since the Great Depression.”
Biden drew negative attention last month when he played the popular Spanish-language song “Despacito” at a campaign event.
Accusations immediately surfaced that he was pandering for votes:
