Former first lady Michelle Obama blasted President Donald Trump as “racist” and divisive while panning his response to the COVID-19 pandemic and falsely claiming he did not take it seriously.
“Right now, our country is in chaos because of a president who isn’t up to the job,” Obama begins in her 24-minute “closing argument” video, which breaks a tradition of former first ladies and presidents refraining from criticizing their successors.
“If you’re a parent like me, you’re feeling the consequences of this president’s failure to take this pandemic seriously… from his constant downplaying of the importance of masks and social distancing… to his relentless pressure on schools to open without offering a clear plan or meaningful support to keep students and teachers safe,” she added.
Obama went on to claim that Trump has engaged in “willful mismanagement of the COVID crisis,” saying he failed to act despite having “every resource at his disposal.”
“We simply cannot trust this president to tell us the truth about anything,” she charged, while blaming the president for ongoing lockdowns around the country that were ordered, and are being maintained, mostly by Democratic governors and mayors.
“It’s painful to think that months into this crisis, this is still where we are,” Obama said, “with no clear plan, no peace of mind. And the worst part is, it didn’t have to be like this.”
Obama pointed to other countries, especially those in Europe, that were also hit with the virus but “aren’t experiencing this level of extended suffering and uncertainty.”
“These countries were hit by the same virus as were, they had the same kind of resources to contain it as we did, but what they didn’t have to contend with was this president,” she continued.
“A man who had every resource at his disposal, the finest medical experts, our best intelligence, and yet ignored all the advice and failed to produce a plan to provide enough tests for worried families or protective equipment for our healthcare workers,” she said. “A man who knew how deadly this virus is, but who lied to us, and told us it would just disappear; who, in the greatest crisis of our lifetimes, doubled down on division and resentment, railed against measures that could’ve mitigated the damage, and continues to hold massive events without requiring masks or social distancing, knowingly exposing his own supporters to a dangerous virus,” said Obama.
Towards the end of the 24-minute video, Obama added: “Search your hearts, and your conscience, and then vote for Joe Biden like your lives depend on it.”
In fact, as the outbreak of the virus spread across the U.S., President Trump and Vice President Mike Pence, who had been put in charge of the government’s coronavirus response, implemented a series of measures that provided an abundance of resources to local governments.
Specifically, the administration:
— Sent the U.S. Navy’s two hospital ships to dock off New York City and Los Angeles in response to calls for assistance from New York and California leaders. In both cases, the ships were only lightly utilized.
— The president also invoked the Defense Production Act in mid-March, to ramp up the manufacture of personal protective equipment and highly sophisticated gear like ventilators, again after they were requested by local leaders. In the end, the vast majority of ventilators were put into surplus because they were not needed; also, by late spring PPE manufacturing was more than keeping pace with demand.
Of note, a USA Today fact-check rates as “true” claims that the Obama administration failed to make significant efforts to replenish stocks of N95 masks following the swine flu epidemic.
A separate report by the newspaper noted that the Strategic National Stockpile was neglected “for years” — including during the Obama administration — and thus was severely under-equipped at the outset of the COVID-19 pandemic.
— Trump also approved “Operation Warp Speed” early on as well, unleashing the scientific and medical community to quickly develop a COVID-19 vaccine. There are literally dozens of vaccines under development and some have already begun human trials.
“Anthony Fauci, director of the National Institute of Allergy and Infectious Diseases, has stated that independent Data and Safety Monitoring Boards can end trials early if their interim results are overwhelmingly positive or negative,” National Geographic reported Friday.
“Meanwhile, the U.S. Food and Drug Administration has promised to fast-track the approval process, though likely with tougher standards in place than is typical for the emergency use authorization process, and the Trump Administration is pushing states to establish vaccine distribution sites by November 1, 2020,” the outlet added.
Mrs. Obama also stoked the racial divide and downplayed riots that have swept through many parts of the country.
