Leaked DHS email says Antifa is not loose confederation but ‘organized’ group

A July email from an intelligence official with the Department of Homeland Security appears to dispel claims that Antifa is a loose and leaderless group of like-minded, spontaneous individuals and is instead “organized.”

The email, leaked to CBS News investigative reporter Catherine Herridge, was written by former Acting Under Secretary for Intelligence and Analysis Brian Murphy, who noted in a July 25 correspondence with colleagues that the continuous violence in Portland, Ore., was not “opportunistic” but instead was “organized.”

“We can’t say any longer that this violent situation is opportunistic. Additionally, we have overwhelmingly (sic) intelligence regarding the ideologies driving individuals toward violence and why the violence has continued,” Murphy wrote.

“A core set of Threat actors are organized, show up night after night, share common TTPs (Tactics, Techniques, and Procedures) and drawing on like-minded individuals to their cause,” Murphy continued, describing much of the chaos as “Violent Antifa Anarchists Inspired,” or VAAI.

“Threat actors who are motivated by Anarchists or ANTIFA (or a combination of both) ideologies to carry out acts of violence against State, Local and Federal authorities,” Murphy noted.

The document was marked as having been sent to the House Intelligence Committee.

“I recognize we may not be able to attribute every individual as VAAI however we need to look at the totality of the intelligence both current and previous and recognize the motivation for the violence and why people have shown up to commit violence for about 60 days. And why the individuals are using social media to encourage the VAAI on the ground to carry out acts of violence,” Murphy continued.

The revealing email comes as Democrats and their allies in the media have continually downplayed any suggestion that Antifa is an organized, anti-government movement.

A Friday report in the Washington Post by Mark Bray, who authored “Antifa: Anti-Fascist Handbook,” discussed five alleged “myths” about the group, claiming it is not an organization but rather a “tradition of militant antifascism.

Bray, an apologist for the group, disputed that Antifa members are “masterminds violence at Black Lives Matter protests.”

Chaotic protests have continued in Portland for more than 100 days. Earlier this month, a man claiming to be Antifa allegedly shot and killed a Patriot Prayer member on a downtown street following a pro-law enforcement rally. The suspect, Michael Forest Reinoehl, was himself shot and killed by federal agents just days later.

“The intelligence provided by the DHS validates claims by conservative voices who have long identified Antifa as an organized movement, and flies in the face of claims that the group was not intent on committing violence or conducting an insurgency against the United States government,” Andy Ngo, editor-at-large for The Post Millennial, wrote in response to the email.

Earlier this summer during a press conference to discuss ongoing violent protests, Attorney General William Barr called out Antifa, saying federal agencies knew that its members were among “extremist agitators who are hijacking the protests to pursue their own separate and violent agenda.”

“We have evidence that Antifa and other similar extremist groups as well as actors of a variety of different political persuasions have been involved in instigating and participating in the violent activity. We are also seeing foreign actors playing all sides,” he said.

DHS, as well as the FBI, has long suspected Antifa as being a “domestic terrorist” group for years.

In 2016, when President Barack Obama was still in office, the agency warned state and local officials about the “extremist” group ramping up attacks on government infrastructure, police, and “the capitalist system.”
