President Donald Trump is getting a personal and glamorous boost to his 2020 reelection campaign as first lady Melania Trump steps into the spotlight.
The wife of the president is setting her sights on November and making a visible push toward her husband’s reelection with upcoming campaign fundraisers.
A pair of events set for the spring will reportedly be hosted by the very private first lady, who is taking on a more visible role in the Trump reelection campaign, according to Politico.
An invitation to a March 18 fundraiser in Beverly Hills, California lists Melania Trump as the host as does a second event on March 25 set to be held at the couple’s Florida estate, Mar-a-Lago. The fundraisers are set to benefit Trump’s 2020 campaign and the Republican National Committee through the Trump Victory account.
A video posted on social media from a gala at Mar-a-Lago over the weekend showed the first lady briefly addressing supporters.
“I’m looking forward to campaigning and fighting for Americans and our great nation. Thank you so much,” she told the cheering crowd.

Mrs. Trump remains highly popular with the president’s supporters but has not played a more visible role in his campaign. At the official 2020 campaign kickoff rally in Orlando, Florida last year, she was met with adoring cheers as she introduced the president.
“It has been my honor to serve as first lady of this incredible country for the past two years. And I’m excited to do it for six more,” she said.

Though Mrs. Trump has not officially done fundraising events for her husband or the Republican Party, and stayed clear of politics during the 2018 midterm elections, though she did send out an appeal defending the president against the attacks by Democrats and the “opposition media.”
“Democrats and the opposition media are doing everything they possibly can to discredit Donald with false accusations by spreading their fake news and making it appear that he does not have the support of America’s voter,” she wrote in a message sent out by the Republican National Committee.
“This is a battle we must win together. I’m asking you and other Americans across the country to personally register your support and help prove that the Democrats and media are wrong,” she added.
Spokespersons from the Trump campaign and the White House declined to comment to Politico on the upcoming fundraisers hosted by the first lady. Though this is her first foray into this area, members of the Trump family, such as his son Donald Trump Jr., have regularly been guests at events with GOP donors. Trump Jr.’s girlfriend, Kimberly Guilfoyle, is chair of the Trump Victory finance committee.
The Trump 2020 campaign has raised millions over the last year, surpassing 2020 Democrats in fundraising. The RNC and the campaign raised more than $154 million in the fourth quarter of 2019, and ended the year with nearly $195 million in the bank – and about $46 million of that was raised just by the Trump campaign amid the Democrats’ ongoing impeachment efforts against him. A combined total of $463.6 million was raised by the groups in 2019.
