President Donald Trump’s personal attorney Rudy Giuliani swore Tuesday that, if granted an opportunity to testify during the president’s upcoming trial in the GOP-led Senate, he’d go all out to prove his client’s innocence.
“I would testify, I would do demonstrations, I’d give lectures, I’d give summations,” he said Tuesday evening from Mar-a-Lago’s annual black-tie New Year’s Eve gala, which was also attended by the president and his family.
The statement was prompted by a reporter asking, “Does the president want you to testify in the trial? Would you testify in the trial?”

It’s not clear if he’ll be asked to testify. What’s known for certain is he won’t be granted a position on the president’s defense team, in part because of his own actions — namely his excursions to Ukraine to investigate former Vice President Joe Biden — are inextricably linked to the dubious charges that the president currently faces.
Instead of ending the conversation there and then, the president’s attorney then — as usual — threw in an extra statement to spice things up.
“Or …,” he continued, “I’d do what I do best: I’d try the case. I’d love to try the case. I don’t know if anybody would have the courage to give me the case, but if you give me the case, I would prosecute it as a racketeering case.”
The stunning statement sparked laughter and shock from reporters, because why on Earth would the president’s lawyer turn around and prosecute his own client?
The remark was likely made in jest. Though it could have also been made to remind viewers that, despite his portrayal as a loose-lipped dingbat, he knows his stuff.
During his former tenure between 1983 and 1989 as the U.S. Attorney for the Southern District of New York, “worked tirelessly to jail drug dealers, prosecute white-collar criminals and disrupt organized crime and government corruption,” according to Biography.com.
“Giuliani’s 4,152 convictions (against only 25 reversals) distinguish him as one of the most effective U.S. Attorneys in American history.”
And if one of the “most effective” prosecutors in American history believes Trump to be innocent, that seems to say a lot about the matter.

These remarks came at the tail end of a lengthier interview with reporters in which Giuliani touted the Trump administration’s 2019 accomplishments, addressed his hopes for 2020 and blasted the Democrats’ destructive impeachment agenda.
“I believe that historically this ‘impeachment’ will not be called an impeachment,” he said. “I believe it’ll be called an illegal coup. I think it will go down in history to disgrace [House Speaker] Nancy Pelosi and [House Intelligence Committee chair Adam] Schiff. There’s never been a partisan impeachment.”
Fact-check: FALSE.
The impeachment of former President Bill Clinton was highly partisan, though ironically, the same Democrats who cried foul over his impeachment have since turned into the loudest supporters of the current impeachment drive against Trump.
“There’s never been an impeachment based on something that isn’t a crime,” Giuliani continued. “There’s never been an impeachment that was put through with no witnesses being allowed, no lawyers being allowed, threatening to put people in jail.”
“Many people are too young to remember the McCarthy era, but Schiff and Pelosi have done a reign of terror like Joseph R. McCarthy, and they’re going to go down in history like when people calm down and watch this carefully,” he added.

Giuliani then addressed his most recent visit to Ukraine.
“What I learned is that the corruption in Ukraine is vast, it’s extensive, it highly involves the Democrat Party — not just in 2016 but for many years,” he said.
“And one of the reasons they’re doing this impeachment is, when the full scope of what happened in the Ukraine comes out, there’re going to be an awful lot of Americans who participated in the Ukrainian corruption. In fact, we shouldn’t call it Ukrainian corruption. We should call it American-Ukrainian corruption.”
While he refused to pinpoint any precise details when pressed by reporters, mainly because the investigation is still ongoing, he did highlight the Bidens by name.
“The Bidens took millions of dollars, laundered out of Ukraine, and the only reason they’re getting away with it is because you in the press protect them, and the prosecutors are afraid you’re going to criticize them,” he maintained.
When the reporters tried again to convince Giuliani to reveal more details, he said only that the investigation is ongoing and judgment day is coming.
“I’m not going to tell you what I found out until I have a proper forum to do it, but it’s devastating,” he said. “We will figure out the right forum, and it will come out at the right time. And I don’t have all the evidence yet.”
“I just met with a new witness yesterday. I can’t tell you who I met with. This is expanding. It will turn out to be a series of criminal acts. It will involve the highest levels of the Obama administration, and it’s the reason the Democrat Party is in a panic.”
