Shepard Smith appears to take veiled shot at Trump, condemns ‘vilification of the press’ at Press Awards

The “journalists” at The New York Times and other demonstrably left-wing outlets clapped their hands in glee Thursday after former Fox News host Shepard Smith delivered a speech in which he spoke out against authoritarian leaders.

While comments deriding the world’s authoritarian leaders would typically be perceived as a positive development, the problem is that the partisan media interpreted Smith’s remarks as an attack on America’s duly elected president.

“Intimidation and vilification of the press is now a global phenomenon. We don’t have to look far for evidence of that,” Smith said as he spoke at the Committee to Protect Journalists’ annual fund-raising dinner, according to the New York Times.

Fact-check: TRUE.

Former President Barack Obama routinely vilified the journalists and commentators at Smith’s former employer, Fox News, and went so far to even spy on one of them.

Of course, this doesn’t appear to be mentioned in any of the media’s reports of Smith’s comments.

“Our belief a decade ago that the online revolution would liberate us now seems a bit premature, doesn’t it?” he continued Thursday. “Autocrats have learned how to use those same online tools to shore up their power. They flood the world of information with garbage and lies, masquerading as news. There’s a phrase for that.”

These comments were immediately linked to President Donald Trump, who admittedly has bashed the media for their false reports.

“[T]he anchor can relate to being the subject of insults and ire from a head of state,” the Times pointed out. “Mr. Trump made Mr. Smith into a favorite punching bag, taunting him as Fox News’s ‘lowest-rated anchor’ and routinely complaining about his coverage of the White House. Mr. Smith had not hesitated to attack the president on the air, calling him out for falsehoods and denouncing his harsh language.”

The Times’ report contained no mentions of Obama’s abusive behavior. Nor did it offer any scrutiny of Smith’s reporting. Instead, it portrayed him as a martyr standing up to the president’s allegedly incessant “falsehoods.”

But on more than one occasion, it was Smith who spouted falsehoods. He lied about the presence of potential terrorists in the infamous caravan of illegal aliens that arrived at the border last year, and he lied about the content of the president’s controversial phone call with Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky over the summer.

Yet like the “journalists” at the Times, the “reporters” with other mainstream networks chose to ignore such facts and portray Smith’s remarks as an indictment of Trump.

“The veteran newsman served as the emcee for International Press Freedom Awards dinner in New York on Thursday night. And during his remarks, he appeared to take a veiled swipe at President Donald Trump,” Mediaite reported.

USA Today added that Smith “allud[ed] to, but never mention[ed] President Donald Trump in his speech.”

Likewise, both outlets mentioned Obama. All three outlets, including the Times, did, however, take a moment to highlight Smith’s ostensible endorsement of independent journalism.

“In his first public remarks since abruptly resigning from Fox News last month, the anchor Shepard Smith called on Thursday for a steadfast defense of independent journalism,” the Times wrote.

It was an ironic endorsement given the media’s repeated attempts to stamp out and deplatform independent, non-establishment journalists and media outlets that refuse to abide by the Democrat Party’s agenda and preferred narratives.

Non-establishment outlets such as The Epoch Times.

“The Epoch Times is a nonpartisan, independent media company that publishes a daily newspaper and website,” Stephen Gregory, the publisher of the paper’s English-language edition, revealed in an op-ed for The Wall Street Journal three months.

“Our motto is ‘Truth and Tradition.’ Last week NBC News and its sister network MSNBC launched a series of irresponsible and misleading attacks on us.”

Fact-check: TRUE.

NBC, a mainstream media outlet, accused Epoch of boasting conspiracy theories, carrying water for the president and being fake news.

Now fast-forward to this week, when the independent paper’s offices on Hong Kong were targeted by arsonists:

How did the establishment media respond? By ignoring the arson. Just Google it. You’ll find zero reports from any mainstream sources.

Why? Because it appears that the likes of Smith and his mainstream defenders don’t actually care about independent journalism. In fact, they seem to have no qualms about smearing those who practice it.

Which, ironically enough, is a habit the establishment media share with real dictators.
