‘Fleabag’ Emmy winner: ‘It’s good a dirty, pervy woman’ wins Emmys

“It’s just really wonderful to know that a dirty, pervy, angry, messed-up woman can make it to the Emmys, so thank you so much,” Phoebe Waller-Bridge said on the Emmy stage on Sunday night after receiving the award for outstanding writing for a comedy series.

It may not have been her intent, but Waller-Bridge’s line spoke to just how irrelevant and disconnected Hollywood award shows have become from actual television viewers. Waller-Bridge was winning the award for the Amazon series “Fleabag.” Haven’t heard of it? Don’t worry. Not many have.

“I find writing really, really hard and really painful, but I’d like to say from the bottom of my heart that the reason that I do it is this, so it’s made it all really worth it,” Waller-Bridge said, poking fun at the meaninglessness awards like Emmys represent in 2019.

Besides the fact that Hollywood award shows typically recognize unpopular, agenda-driven material over art that presents solid storytelling and memorable characters, the events have also seen ratings tank as celebrities have become more and more political. Watching acceptance speeches is now about as entertaining as tuning into CSPAN.

Laverne Cox, who stars in Netflix’s “Orange is the New Black,” carried a rainbow-colored purse on the red carpet with the phrases “Oct. 8,” “Title VII” and “Supreme Court” on Sunday night. She was accompanied by Chase Strangio, a staff attorney with the ACLU’s LGBT & HIV Project.

“October 8. Everyone should be aware that the (Trump) administration is asking the Supreme Court to make it legal to fire workers just because they are LGBTQ. And this is actually going to transform the lives of LGBTQ people, and people who are not LGBTQ, anyone who diverts from (stereotypes), like all the fabulous people here,” Strangio told E Network. “So we really need to show up on Oct. 8, and really pay attention, because our lives are on the line.”

Others weren’t as specifically political but instead gave a big, sloppy kiss to modern liberal Hollywood.

“We are the people, we as artists are the people that get to change the molecular structure of the hearts and minds of the people who live on this planet. Please don’t ever stop doing that. Please don’t ever stop telling the truth,” Billy Porter said after winning for his performance on the FX series “Pose.” He was the first openly gay actor to win best actor in a drama series.

A moment that earned special scorn on social media was the acceptance speech by “Game of Thrones” star Peter Dinklage, who was winning for a season of the HBO fantasy series that was so hated over a million and a half fans signed a petition asking for it be to be remade.

“I count myself so fortunate to be a member of a community that is nothing but all about tolerance and diversity because no other place could I be standing on a stage like this,” Dinklage said.

This is an especially ignorant statement as the biases against conservatives and right-leaning thinkers in Hollywood has become crystal-clear. Stars like Debra Messing and Will McCormick were even caught recently openly calling for Trump supporters to be blacklisted.

“Diversity of what, exactly?” conservative actor Adam Baldwin tweeted in response to Dinklage’s words. Baldwin starred in “The Kid” this year and just ended a five-season run on “The Last Ship.”

Baldwin followed up by commenting, “The only true diversity in human affairs is intellectual diversity. #UnpleasantFacts.”

Plenty agreed with Baldwin.

“Gosnell” director and “Justified” star Nick Searcy also poked fun at increasingly liberal and intolerant celebrities in a tweet:

While elite Hollywood continues its descent into irrelevance, people will continue to ignore these “dirty, pervy” award show winners and support the art professional critics tell them to ignore, like Dave Chappelle’s recent comedy special taking on political correctness and Stallone’s latest “Rambo” entry, which dares to show the violence taking place on our Southern border.
