Rep. Ilhan Omar, D-Minn., may be having marital problems, as it has been reported that she recently split with her husband, but its not the man who is no longer there who may be getting her attention as much as it is a new man on the horizon.
The controversial freshman Democrat, one of four radical progressives known as the “squad,” just received a serious challenger for her House seat.
Chris Kelley, a celebrated Iraqi war veteran, is set on running for Minnesota’s 5th Congressional District seat, replacing Omar, who has been marred in controversy from the beginning, whether it’s being rebuked in the House for her anti-Semitic actions, or jousting with President Trump. Or even persistent reports that she may have committed immigration fraud by marrying her biological brother — with tax fraud potentially being part of the picture.
Omar, a Somali refugee, offended many in a callous description of the 9/11 attacks as “some people did something,” and that did not escaped Kelly’s notice.
“September 11 was a terrible loss of life, not just for police officers and firefighters and other first responders, but 3,000 people and non-combatants died, and to be dismissive of that was an outrage. I could sit and complain or I could do something about it,” Kelley told Fox News. “And I believe I can be a positive voice in standing up for people in our country, and for our first responders and the people every day on the frontlines.”
Running as an Independent, Kelley is the recipient of 11 medals after 27 years in the U.S. Army and Army Reserves. He was also a Minneapolis Police Force officer for 20 years.
He deployed once during Operation Desert Storm and twice during Operation Iraqi Freedom as an intelligence analyst, according to Fox News. Kelley holds an master’s degree in Criminal Justice Leadership from Concordia University in St. Paul.
With Omar in the news recently for saying “our country should be more fearful of white men,” it’s worth noting that Kelley is also white.
And while Kelley’s impressive military service earns him recognition, he’s not running to be a “celebrity,” which the veteran said Omar spends too much time pursuing rather than focusing on her community.
“As former military, I am here to serve and not further my status,” Kelley said. “I want to do a good job for the people I represent and I don’t have a personal agenda.”
“I’m passionate about service and I just want to be able to continue that,” he added.
One thing seems certain, Kelley should prove to be a more formidable challenger than Danielle Stella, who has filed to run against Omar, even though she’s facing a pending felony theft charge.
