CNN panel laments failure of Dems to bring down Trump: ‘Certainly seems like Trump is winning’

Robert Mueller’s testimony before two different House committees yielded little if any wins for Democrats who were hard-pressed to find any encouragement even at CNN.

Panelists on CNN’s “Anderson Cooper 360” on Wednesday reacted to the former counsel’s testimony earlier before the House Judiciary and Intelligence committees, discussing the general failure of Democrats to take down President Donald Trump.

“You know what might be a good idea for Democrats in the House of Representatives is to find out something,” CNN legal analyst Jeffrey Toobin said.

“They won control of the House of Representatives and they were going to do investigations. Name one thing that any of these investigations have uncovered, now we’re almost at the summer recess,” he exclaimed. “Like, what are they doing?”

“They have been stymied by the president. They have run into unprecedented, you know, interference from the president but I mean, let’s not kid ourselves,” the former federal prosecutor added. “This has been a wall to wall failure in all these committees.”

Host Anderson Cooper turned to ask USA Today columnist Kirsten Powers if she agreed.

“Yeah, definitely. Yeah,” she responded.

“I agree with everything that you’re saying and I think it’s — the process is being driven by obviously political interests by wanting to please the base that are very animated, understandably, about Donald Trump and really want to see him go and really want to see him be held accountable,” she said.

“Nancy Pelosi, if she thought that this was going to work, I think she would support it. There is no question this is not a person who is a fan of Donald Trump and I think she feels the same way,” she added, referring to Democrats’ efforts to impeach Trump.

The House Speaker reportedly shot down a push by House Judiciary Committee Chairman Jerry Nadler to launch impeachment proceedings against the president Wednesday following Mueller’s testimony. The California Democrat seemed increasingly frustrated as reporters peppered her with questions about impeachment.

Meanwhile, the CNN panel on Wednesday seemed to agree that Mueller’s appearance on Capitol Hill did nothing to help the Democrats’ case against the president.

“But Jeffrey is right. I mean, they need to do better than what they are doing and I actually think this whole hearing that we watched today was pretty close to a disaster for them, as well,” Powers told the panel.

“They didn’t advance the ball in any way for themselves and then also had a situation where Robert Mueller was looking kind of out of his depth, you know,” she added.  “You can make your excuses for him if you want but I think that  he wasn’t helping their case.”

In a separate CNN panel discussion, Toobin had conceded that, although Trump and Mueller had some things in common, the president was definitely “winning.”

“I was struck by the enormous personal contrast between Robert Mueller and Donald Trump. They have a lot of common. They’re within months of each other in terms of how old they are, they were both raised in wealth, both Ivy League educated,” Toobin said. “In demeanor, and approach, they’re from different planets.”

“He said so much less than he could have said. He didn’t pass judgment beyond what was precisely in the report,” he said of Mueller. “And as we all know from watching tweets and watching the president, they are just so different. And you look who’s winning now, it certainly seems like Donald Trump is winning between the two of them.”
