While Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez’s shameless use of a southern drawl to pander to the predominantly black audience at Al Sharpton’s National Action Network’s annual convention Friday drew scathing condemnation, none of the criticism matched that of conservative firebrand Candace Owens.
“This is the most insulting thing that I’ve ever seen!” the proud black conservative and Turning Point USA director of communications angrily declared in a video posted to Twitter on Saturday. “Why do you have to speak like that to black Americans to get their vote or to be relatable?”
“I’m marrying a British man. He had a British accent. He didn’t have to put on a hood accent to get me. Why can’t black Americans understand English? Why can’t she have just said what she wanted to say in perfect English? Is the idea that we’re so dumb that we don’t know how to communicate effectively, and we find it relatable when people break up our language?”
“Did she have to speak Ebonics? Did she have to throw in colloquialisms? Do you have to swear in order to get black Americans to understand?”
Liberal Democrats seem to believe they do.
Listen to Owens below:
“I say this over and over again: The left thinks black people are stupid,” she added.
“People say, ‘How can you support Trump?’ Trump speaks the exact same way whether he’s in the room with people that are white, Hispanic, black. … Trump speaks the exact same way no matter what room you are in, because he respects us enough to tell us the truth.”
Liberal Democrats on the other hand have a history of modifying their speaking pattern depending on whom the audience happens to be. While speaking to a black church congregation during the 2008 presidential election, then-Democrat presidential candidate Hillary Clinton shamelessly donned a southern drawl to mimic block voters, much to the chagrin of black commentator Walter Williams.
“The occasion of Mrs. Clinton’s speech was the 42nd anniversary of Bloody Sunday, on March 7, 1965, when 600 civil rights marchers were attacked by police with billy clubs, cattle prods and tear gas, one of the high points in the black civil rights struggle,” Williams opined at the time.
“Commemorating a key point in American history is one thing, but a white person mimicking black dialect is demeaning and insulting. And, if it buys her votes from those in attendance, not much flattering can be said about them.”
Listen to Clinton below:
Former Vice President Joe Biden pulled a similar stunt back in 2006. And now over a decade later, young congresswoman Ocasio-Cortez appears to be following in his and Clinton’s footsteps.
“This is why I’m Trump all day, Trump 2020, Trump 2024, Trump 2028, because he has the audacity to speak to black Americans like we’re actually individuals that deserve a real conversation about how we fix our communities,” Owens said in concluding her video.
So how has AOC responded to the criticism she’s receiving? By crying foul and trotting out the canard about a “right wing conspiracy” plotting to undermine her. It’s eerie how similar her rhetoric sounds to that of Clinton, who’s been accusing the right of perpetrating a conspiracy against her for decades.
Observe:
Folks talking about my voice can step right off. Women’s March & Kavanaugh speech, same.
Any kid who grew up in a distinct linguistic culture & had to learn to navigate class enviros at school/work knows what’s up.
My Spanish is the same way.
These conspiracy mills are ?. https://t.co/8li33Jd6DL

As much as the right wants to distort & deflect, I am from the Bronx. I act & talk like it, *especially* when I’m fired up and especially when I’m home.
It is so hurtful to see how every aspect of my life is weaponized against me, yet somehow asserted as false at the same time.

It’s not just members of the “right” criticizing her, but never mind that.
In response to the young congresswoman’s newfound victimhood, Owens returned to socia media to scathingly tell her, “Don’t you even try it.”
“Where was that ‘Bronx’ accent when you were on 60 minutes talking to @andersoncooper like you were a six year old little girl?” she wrote. “Your Christine Blasey Ford ‘accent’ is my personal favorite. STOP PANDERING TO BLACKS, @AOC! WE SPEAK ENGLISH TOO.”
Kaboom!
Look:
Don’t you even try it.
Where was that “Bronx” accent when you were on 60 minutes talking to @andersoncooper like you were a six year old little girl? Your Christine Blasey Ford “accent” is my personal favorite.
STOP PANDERING TO BLACKS, @AOC!
WE SPEAK ENGLISH TOO. https://t.co/WYJED6zZzV— Candace Owens (@RealCandaceO) April 6, 2019
Yet AOC continues to double down. As of late Saturday she’d taken to lecturing Americans about “code-switching,” which Merriam-Webster defines as “the switching from the linguistic system of one language or dialect to that of another.” Because there’s a word to describe her pandering, she appears to think that engaging in so-called “code-switching” is perfectly fine.
A whole host of people disagree:
Code-switching? What you did was extremely racist. If a republican did it you guys would start an investigation. That truly made me cringe watching it. #Youshouldbeashamed @realDonaldTrump @POTUS @seanhannity

No matter how much you tweet about it or label it as codeswitching, we can’t unsee or in-hear that fake ass “accent.” Quit explaining yourself. It’s not helping.

You don’t understand code switching. You’re not even close. Others understand. I understand. For you to succeed at your job, start listening to your constituents you represent. You were given two ears and one mouth for a reason.

Your racism and contempt for working people-we are all crude animals to liberals like you-is on full display. Scoundrel.
— Greg Martin (@SelkirkArt) April 7, 2019
Give it up already!!! You were pandering to a black audience with a fake and terrible southern black dialect. Just admit it and move on.

AOC admit she’s wrong? That’ll probably never happen …
