Senate Minority Leader Chuck Schumer’s proposal to rename the Russell Senate Office Building hasn’t been approved, but Google went ahead and did it anyway.
Google Maps displayed the Russell Senate Office Building in Washington, D.C., as the “McCain Senate Office Building” when searched for via desktop or laptop Wednesday morning. The tech giant’s display comes in the wake of Schumer’s call to remove former Georgia Democratic Sen. Richard Russell Jr.’s name from the office building in light of Russell’s opposition to desegregation, anti-lynching and anti-poll tax laws.

“So that future generations will study his example, I’ve proposed that we rename the Russell Senate Office Building, one of only three Senate office buildings, after John McCain,” Schumer wrote on Twitter Monday.
We can honor him by trying to carry on the principles he lived by. We can try, as he did, to put country before party. We can try, as he did, to speak truth to power. & we can try,as he summoned us to try,to restore the Senate to its rightful place in our national political life.

Google Maps reverted the building back to its original name sometime later that morning, but displayed Russell Senate Office Building when McCain Senate Office Building was searched. Some Twitter users interpreted the display as a jab at President Donald Trump, given the history of clashes between late Sen. John McCain and Trump.

The timing of the display is also significant, given that Wednesday would have been McCain’s 82nd birthday.
