A Catholic college freaked out over stickers saying “it’s okay to be white,” according to a Monday report.
John Neuhauser, president of St. Michael’s College in Colchester, Vt., suggested the stickers constituted “hate speech,” reported campus paper The Defender.
“While the College supports free speech, it cannot and will not tolerate hate speech, even when thinly veiled,” Neuhauser said to the college community by email. “Let us be clear: This was not done in some benign way to suggest equality for all is important.”
“Their goal was to recruit for white supremacists groups,” said Moise St. Louis, the school’s director of multicultural student services and associate dean of students. He talked to the students about the incident at a mandatory chapel service Sunday night. “Their hope is to dictate how we respond and spread chaos. They gave us an opportunity to come together to share our values,” he said.
Students also reflected on the “it’s okay to be white” stickers to The Defender.
“My friends didn’t feel safe sleeping last night,” said student Marlon Hyde. “Many of my friends don’t feel protected and our scared for their own safety.”
Sophie Adams, president of St. Michael’s student association, said that the group would be lengthening its office hours in light of the event.
Adams urged students to submit “bias incident” reports and contact public safety investigators, as well as write “letters of support” to minorities affected by the stickers. The Defender noted that, alongside the “it’s okay to be white” stickers, the school also found at least one sticker stating “embrace white identity today.”
The Daily Caller News Foundation reached out to St. Michael’s College for additional comment regarding both why it deemed the stickers “hate speech” and the school’s general approaches to campus expression, but received none in time for press.
