Topic flips like a switch when CNN guest brings up that time Trump accused Obama of wiretapping

CNN legal analyst Jeffrey Toobin mentioned allegations of former President Barack Obama wiretapping President Donald Trump’s campaign and “New Day” hosts Alisyn Camerota and John Berman couldn’t change the subject fast enough.

Toobin began the segment claiming average Americans couldn’t follow along with the Foreign Intelligence Surveillance Act (FISA) memo because it was too complex for them.

“I think the Nunes memo is such a complicated story, frankly, that ordinary civilians have a hard time following,” Toobin said. “I suspect most people have made up their mind to the extent they have an opinion about this story at all. It’s turned into a partisan food fight.”

“The Democrats have already made their arguments about the whole subject,” he continued. “So the memo itself, I mean people will read it, those who are interested. But I think this has been the story of this past Trump year. Stories that were, you know, explosive and big. Remember he said, Obama wiretapped me. Like, what? That was a huge story we spent months on.”

CNN had criticized Trump for making such claims, but it was later confirmed the Federal Bureau of Investigation (FBI) had tapped Paul Manafort. That along with the Nunes memo made the allegations more plausible. Just as Toobin was about to dissect the wiretap story he was cut off by Camerota.

“That is about the memo and the rebuttal. That is the heart of this,” she said.

“It’s whiplash,” Toobin replied.

Before Toobin could share more thoughts on the story, Berman stepped in and began to steer the conversation in a different direction.

“I will say when the Republican memo finally came out, we did learn some things,” Berman said. “This didn’t necessarily support the argument they were making. But we did learn a few items there. It’s possible we’ll learn a few new things when the Democratic memo comes out.”

He added:

One question Jeffrey about the scandal in the White House right now. These abuse allegations about a key White House aide. We’ve been talking about the honesty issue frankly inside the White House right now and the cover-up and how they treat domestic abuse. But there’s a security issue here, a fundamental security issue here. Which is, the gate keeper of paper and information to the president could have been compromised.
