Attorney General Jeff Sessions is feeling the pressure from President Donald Trump to get FBI Director Christopher Wray to fire deputy director Andrew McCabe, but Wray is threatening to resign if McCabe is ousted from the bureau, Axios reports.
Sessions reportedly told White House Counsel Don McGahn about Wray’s reaction to his pressuring, and McGahn advised Sessions that the matter was not worth having Wray resign.
Trump exerting pressure on an FBI director is not something uncommon to his presidency. The president kicked off his first year in the White House pressuringformer FBI Director James Comey to stop an investigation into a former Trump adviser. Trump also reportedly asked Comey to publicly announce that he was not under investigation.
The president nominated Wray in June 2017 after firing Comey that May.
Reports have speculated Wray is planning to retire in 2018 when he becomes eligible for his pension, but the reports are still unconfirmed by the department officials.
