Fox News’ veteran journalist Geraldo Rivera wanted to set the record straight over Michael Wolff’s book “Fire and Fury,” which has lit both a fire in the mainstream media and provoked the fury of the Trump White House.
Geraldo lambasted Wolff for misrepresenting his access to Trump’s inner circle. That would be key, you know, for a book whose subtitle is “Inside the Trump White House.”
“Kimberly,” Jesse Watters said to The Five co-host Kimberly Guilfoyle, “before we get your take on recent developments, the new nickname and where does Sloppy Steve rank with Trump’s nicknames?”
“It’s not as good as Pocahontas,” she responded, in reference to Trump’s Liz Warren moniker. “Or Lyin’ Ted. But it’s pretty good. It conjures up the image of like a Sloppy Joe. Get it? This big messy sandwich. It’s not something I would be happy with if I was Steve Bannon. It just suggests a sort of a slovenly, disheveled appearance. It’s not, shall we say, a charming, affectionate nickname.”
“Geraldo, you were kind of mumbling to yourself when we were listening to the soundbite, about the access that this guy got, and kind of ridiculing the fact that he only got three hours in the course of nine months?” Watters continued.
“It’s more than 9 months,” Geraldo responded, clearly agitated. “Because the campaign began in 2015. So, what you have is three hours. But that is not three hours of Michael Wolff speaking with President Trump or President-Elect Trump or candidate Trump. That’s him being in the presence of Donald Trump, the man that he is absolutely analyzes as if he were a shrink and says things.”
“Yesterday my wrath was directed at the ‘Benedict Arnold’ Steve Bannon,” he continued, “who absolutely has behaved traitorously to the family that entrusted him. Today, I really — and I don’t generally like criticizing reporters — but Michael Wolff said something that I think begs exploration and analysis.”
“Michael Wolff said, and I’m quoting,” he said, “One hundred percent of the people around Donald Trump, senior advisers and family members, every single one of them, questions his intelligence and fitness for office.”
“Really?” he exploded. “‘Every single one of the family members?’ I thought. This is a patent lie! This is absolutely untrue. And at some point, even people on the left have to admit, as the Washington Post did today when they questioned whether he got access at all under false pretenses. Everyone watching has to question, every one of the president’s family? So Ivanka, who Michael Wolff said is ‘dumb as rocks,’ she questions the intelligence and fitness of her father for office?
“This is not true! It’s unfair,” he continued. “It is so screamingly inequitable to accuse the president of being someone who lacks intelligence and fitness for office and then says every one of his family agrees with me, the author.
“You know for a fact they don’t think that,” Guilfoyle chimed in. “They love their father.”
“Absolutely, it is logical,” Geraldo said. “You know that it is untrue.”
“It’s riddled with a lot of dishonest reporting,” Watters said. “And we pointed to some of these examples. But they did let the fox into the henhouse, Dana, for a long time. So, they do share a little responsibility for this salacious reporting.”
“Yeah,” Dana Perino, former White House press secretary, replied. “One of the things he said this morning he kept waiting for someone to say ‘why are you in this meeting?’ It’s just inconceivable to me that this actually happened in the first place.”
“But remember,” she continued, “At the very beginning, they didn’t have a White House communications director, it was unclear who was responsible for what, and Sean Spicer’s role was not only White House press secretary, but also communications director. It’s impossible, in my opinion, to do both, and to do both well, if you don’t have people there who are looking for you. And they really did a disservice to the president, whoever decided to let him in.”
