The deputy chair of the Democratic National Committee has reportedly received donations from an official with a Muslim group advocating for violence against Israel.
A contribution was made to Rep. Keith Ellison by an official with the anti-Israel American Muslims for Palestine group last year, according to the Washington Free Beacon.
Taher Herzallah, the group’s associate director of outreach and grassroots organizing, made the donation to the Minnesota Democratic Party leader in March 2017, soon after Ellison was named the DNC deputy chairman.
According to Free Beacon:
Herzallah is best known as one of the “Irvine 11,” a group of students who were sentenced to three years probation for actions taken to disrupt a 2010 speech by then-Israeli ambassador Michael Oren. He more recently—just a few weeks before his contribution to Ellison—was arrested for disrupting confirmation hearings for U.S. ambassador to Israel David Friedman.
Herzallah has in recent years openly advocated for using violence to destroy Israel, saying in 2014 that “the State of Israel is a lie” and “Israelis have to be bombed.”
“Israelis have to be bombed, they are a threat to the legitimacy of Palestine, and it is wrong to maintain the State of Israel,” he has said, according to the Anti-Defamation League. “It is an illegitimate creation born from colonialism and racism.”
Herzallah runs the AMP’s campus group, Students for Justice in Palestine. It is the leading activist group for the campaign bent on the economic destruction of Israel, “Boycott, Divestment, Sanctions” (BDS). Until his run for the top DNC position, Ellison was an open supporter of BDS.
He later walked back that support as he came under fire for that and his other positions, such as his association with the Muslim Brotherhood-founded Muslim American Society.
Ellison sparked backlash again this week when he posted a photo of himself holding a copy of Mark Bray’s “Antifa: The Anti-Fascist Handbook.” Ellison’s position as the “second-in-command of the entire Democratic party,” according to Fox News’ Tucker Carlson, “should terrify Democrats” given his background and beliefs.
