Heinous: Man allegedly takes pictures of dead wife’s body with kids and then dismembered it

A Kansas man allegedly took photos of his dead wife with her newborn baby and toddler before dismembering her body in a Missouri hotel room.

Justin Rey became extremely agitated at his hearing, and yelled that his rights had been violated. Video screeshot.

The 35 year-old man was arrested last month and was accused of carrying his wife’s remains around for days in a portable cooler after cutting her up in the Kansas City hotel room, ABC News reported.  Justin Rey, his pregnant wife and their 2-year-old daughter checked into the hotel where the woman ended up giving birth before she died.

According to ABC News:

Rey told police that his wife, Jessica Monteiro Rey, died after giving birth Oct. 20 and that he dismembered her in a bathtub two days later with the children present. Rey put some of her body parts in a large cooler, a police detective wrote in a probable-cause statement. Rey used a stove to boil parts that didn’t fit in the cooler and flushed some of remains down the toilet, the statement says.

Hotel management said Rey tried to disguise his voice as a woman’s when he called the front desk to check out on Oct. 23, the statement says. Surveillance video footage shows him pulling a red cooler with a black bag on top through the hotel while pushing a stroller with a toddler walking beside him.

Police found the remains on Oct. 24 inside a cooler and tote at a U-Haul Moving and Storage facility in nearby Lenexa, Kansas, after Rey slept there with the children. Emergency responders checked on the children, who were later taken to a hospital. The affidavit says the baby wasn’t wearing adequate clothing and had an eye infection.

Though court records do not indicate how his wife died, Rey said she committed suicide after giving birth but also stated that she died during or after childbirth.

He allegedly placed her body on the bed after she had died and took pictures of her with himself and the children. They allegedly stayed in the room two more days with her corpse before moving the body back to the bathtub, according to People.

Court documents state that Rey called the hotel’s front desk, impersonating a female, on Oct. 23 in order to check out.

Rey reportedly met a couple at a restaurant the next day and the man and wife agreed to drive him to a Kansas storage unit where he was staying with the children and his wife’s remains and then to a train station.

According to People:

He retrieved the cooler, and as he dragged it outside, the documents allege the husband noticed brown liquid leaking from it.

Rey was detained by Lenexa police after employees of the storage facility called 911 after becoming concerned for his two children.

Responding officers, noticing the infant, asked Rey where his wife was. He allegedly told them part of her was in the cooler and the rest of her was in a tote bag, according to the documents.

During a court appearance earlier this month, Rey screamed that his rights were being violated and denied that he had been living in the storage unit with the children.

Rey was charged Wednesday in Jackson County, Missouri with abandonment of a corpse and endangering the welfare of a child.  He was jailed on $1 million bond in Johnson County, Kansas, on child endangerment charges, according to ABC News. The children have been placed in protective custody.
