When Sarah Sanders is hit with Robert E. Lee ‘gotcha’ question, she takes no prisoners with response

White House Press Secretary Sarah Sanders shut down reporters like April Ryan who implied that White House Chief of Staff, General John Kelly, supports slavery because he said historic statues shouldn’t be torn down.

“Because you don’t like history doesn’t mean you can erase it and pretend it didn’t happen,” Sanders said at a press conference Tuesday. “That’s the point General Kelly was trying to make. And to try to create something to push a narrative that simply doesn’t exist is, frankly, outrageous and absurd.”

Kelly has been under fire for saying he doesn’t believe historic statues — like those of Confederate general Robert E. Lee and explorer Christopher Columbus — should be torn down simply because liberals suddenly find them racist.

“One hundred or 200 years from now, people will criticize us for what we do. And I guess they’ll tear down statues of people that we revere today,” Kelly told Fox News. “It’s just very, very dangerous and it shows you how much of a lack of appreciation of history [there is today].”

Kelly was also slammed for saying the “inability to compromise” led to the Civil War. By that, he undoubtedly meant the war could have been avoided through a compromise (that obviously did not involve slavery, duh).

“The lack of an ability to compromise led to the Civil War, and men and women of good faith on both sides made their stand where their conscience had them make their stand,” he said.

Race-baiting media, like CNN contributor April Ryan, pounced on Kelly’s remarks to suggest he supports slavery and idolizes Robert E. Lee.

“It is absurd and disgraceful to keep trying to take [comments] out of context to mean something they simply don’t,” Sarah Sanders told reporters.

Sanders said Kelly was merely saying that all leaders have flaws (even the great ones), but that doesn’t diminish their historical significance.

Let’s be real: If we tore down statues of every historical icon because they had flaws, there’d be no statues left.

“All of our leaders have flaws,” Sanders said, citing former presidents George Washington, Thomas Jefferson, John Kennedy, and Theodore Roosevelt. “That doesn’t diminish their contributions to our country, and we certainly can’t erase them from history.”

General John Kelly is not the only person who thinks it’s inane to tear down statues of flawed historical icons like Robert E. Lee and Christopher Columbus.

NBA Hall of Famer Charles Barkley trashed Antifa thugs who are tearing down statues they suddenly find racist, saying they need to calm the hell down.

“That is wasted energy,” said Barkley, who has voted mostly for Democrats. “I’m not going to waste my time worrying about these Confederate statues.”

When asked what should be done about Confederate statues, Barkley retorted: “I am 54 years old. I’ve never thought about those statues a day in my life. If you ask most black people, they haven’t thought a day in their lives about those stupid statues.”

Leftists had no problem with these same statues during the 8-year presidency of Barack Obama — the nation’s first black president. The monuments only became “racist” after President Trump took office.

While we’re tearing down “offensive” statues, don’t forget to erase these monuments from our history:
