Dating sites aren’t all they’re cracked up to be.
An elderly Newport News, Virginia man allegedly “strangled” a much younger woman following a first date misunderstanding, Daily Mail reports.
Alan Richard Schmitt, 77, has been arrested and charged with assault after being accused of choking a woman he met on a dating site.
As you can imagine, there’s a colorful story behind the news. Here’s how it was reported:
Schmitt connected with the 23-year-old woman on the website Plenty of Fish. When the 77-year-old showed up at his date’s home, he was told he was older than his prospective date thought.
As a result, the woman insisted she wasn’t interested in dating, but said they could still be friends. She then accepted an invitation to go to the mall, where Schmitt bought her $400 of clothes.
That’s when things got heated. According to the woman, Schmitt demanded she return all the clothes–including the shirt she was wearing. When she refused to give him the shirt, he allegedly threw her to the ground, placed his hands around her neck, and began choking her.
Officer Jeffrey Cumming, who wrote the report on the complaint, noted that he saw “small bleeding scratches” on the woman’s neck, and her necklace was in pieces.
Schmitt offered his own version of the story. He claims a verbal argument broke out when he went back for the clothes he had purchased. The woman got in front of him and pushed him in the face.
The frustrated man told police the push made him lose his balance, causing him to reach out and grab her by the neck. He says he’s “unsure as to how she ended up on the ground as well.”
Schmitt has been charged with felony strangling of another causing wounds or injury. He’s been scheduled for a return to court on November 14.
Maybe next time he’ll consider hitting up ladies’ night at the local bar instead.
