Florida no-nonsense Attorney General Pam Bondi (R) might have a small frame, but when it comes to protecting Floridians from price gouging, she packs a huge punch.
During a Friday Fox News appearance, Bondi lit into South Florida businesses accused of price-gouging customers simply trying to evacuate or prepare for the arrival of Hurricane Irma.
As Irma has approached, Bondi’s office has dealt with thousands of complaints against businesses for raising their prices supposedly to take advantage of the disaster for monetary gain, and she’s having none of it.

“You cannot inflate prices during the time of a hurricane for essential commodities, food, water, fuel, etc.” Bondi said. The particularly singled out the 300 “water complaints” and 45 separate complaints against Chevron gas stations in the area.
“Chevron if you’re watching me right now you need to call us and tell us why your prices are inflated in South Florida,” Bondi said. “Because in Tallahassee they’re not. In Tampa, there’s not. In South Florida, they’re high, and there’s no excuse for that.”
Not a good look, Chevron.
To the companies who gouge customers, Bondi has a warning in addition to the monetary fines that will be imposed:
“I will be saying your name all over national television and telling people not to go to your business ever again, if you’re stealing from Floridians and taking advantage of Floridians in time of need. It’s not about the money, it’s about commodities that are helping to keep people alive, keep their children safe.”
The Florida attorney general did give airlines like Delta and Jet Blue credit for “coming together” and offering reasonable rates for customers to get away. She also had kind words for Home Depot, which had sold 350,000 pieces of plywood “in one day” to help people protect their buildings.
As for everyone else … “If you’re a bad business, we are coming after you.”
