Redesigned rainbow ‘Pride flag’ added 2 colors for inclusiveness, conspicuously MISSING one color

A rainbow flag redesigned by LGBT activists to be more “inclusive” is conspicuously missing one color.

As part of the new More Color More Pride campaign and coinciding with the beginning of Pride Month, Philadelphia’s Office of LGBT Affairs and  local ad agency, Tierney, unveiled the new flag earlier this month outside of Philadelphia City Hall, CNN reported.

The redesigned rainbow flag featured the addition of one black stripe and one brown stripe in support of gay, lesbian, bisexual, and transgender people of color. Obviously missing in the different shades is the color white.

Amber Hikes, director of the city’s Office of LGBT Affairs and identified by CNN as a “black queer woman,” said the raising of the flag was “such a profound statement” in a city that has allegedly seen multiple cases of racial discrimination in the past year.

“White people do not know what racism looks like, because that’s the definition of racism,” Hikes said, noting that the”vast majority” of critics of the new design are gay white men. Of course, these same gay white men assumed the existing rainbow flag already represented everyone.

A More Color More Pride video posted on YouTube referred to the “inclusive” flag and what the change meant.

“We say that we’re inclusive. We celebrate it. Now it’s time to go further,” the video narrator stated. “To broaden the horizons of our community. To change our iconic symbol … To not just talk about being inclusive, but to finally do it,”

According to research, a majority of those in the U.S. who actually identify as lesbian, gay, bisexual, or transgender are white – the one color not added to the flag.

In a 2013 Pew Research survey, 34 percent of the 1,197 LGBT adults surveyed identified as non-white while 66 percent identified as white.
