Everything we know about The New York Time’s secret Comey leaker

Former FBI Director James Comey told Congress Thursday he instructed a close friend of his from Columbia University Law School to leak details of his conversations with President Donald Trump to The New York Times.

Columbia University law professor Daniel Richman confirmed to The Washington Post he was Comey’s friend who leaked the information to TheNYT. Richman’s biography at Columbia notes that he is “currently an adviser to FBI Director James B. Comey.”

Comey confirmed he deployed Richman as an anonymous source in the hope of sparking the appointment of a special counsel by the Department of Justice. Richman read portions of Comey’s private memo’s detailing conversations with Trump regarding former National Security Advisor Michael Flynn.

Richman has been described as both a “friend” and “advisor” in past media reports with respect to Comey, where he defended his handling of the Clinton email investigation. Richman also spoke to The New York Times on the record after Comey was fired and confirmed he spoke with the former director “several times since he was fired.”

The biography also notes that “Richman is a former federal prosecutor who served as chief appellate attorney in the U.S. Attorney’s Office for the Southern District of New York, and has served as a consultant to the Department of Justice and the Department of the Treasury on federal criminal matters.”
