Pro-2A groups want Maryland’s Glock ban placed on ice

Daily Caller News Foundation

Multiple pro-Second Amendment groups are asking a federal judge to prevent Maryland from enforcing a ban on Glock pistols.

Democratic Gov. Wes Moore became the second governor to enact a ban on so-called “machine gun convertible pistols” in May, following Democratic California Gov. Gavin Newsom, who signed a similar ban in October 2025. The National Rifle Association (NRA), Second Amendment Foundation (SAF) and Firearms Policy Coalition (FPC) argue in the motion for a temporary injunction that the Glock falls under the Second Amendment protections recognized in the Supreme Court’s 2008 Heller v. District of Columbia ruling.

“As handguns, these arms are clearly protected by the Second Amendment as articulated in Heller, and SB 334 is flatly unconstitutional under settled law,” the groups said in the filing. “But even if they are treated as a discrete subset of handguns, which they should not be, the pistols banned by Maryland are still in common use; indeed, they are among the most popular firearms in the nation. Yet if SB 334 is enforced, ordinary Marylanders will have no way to lawfully acquire these common, constitutionally protected arms.”

“Maryland’s latest gun ban is an assault on the constitutional rights of every peaceable American and exactly the kind of tyranny the Second Amendment was enshrined to protect against,” FPC President Brandon Combs said in a Monday release. “In this law, the State has banned peaceable people from acquiring some of the most popular handguns in America. If Maryland’s ban is allowed to stand, it could be extended to prohibit virtually every semiautomatic firearm.”

Moore did not immediately respond to a request for comment from the Daily Caller News Foundation.

Under current federal law, it is illegal to possess or manufacture a fully-automatic firearm that is not registered or authorized under the provisions of the National Firearms Act.

Glock pistols are among the most popular in the United States, regularly appearing in lists of the most-sold firearms compiled by outlets like Guns and Guns and Ammo magazine. The company’s Glock 19X sold over 100,000 copies in less than six months after the pistol’s release, according to a 2018 press release by the company.

In addition to being popular among law-abiding citizens, Glock pistols are also used by numerous law enforcement agencies, including the FBI, which has issued versions of the handgun to its agents since 1997. Former Vice President Kamala Harris boasted on multiple occasions about owning a Glock pistol she acquired for personal protection.
