Ouch! Mere mention of new DNC chairman Tom Perez elicits boos before he speaks at DNC event

Democrats kicking off the “Come Together and Fight Back” Tour in Maine did not have a warm welcome for their new Committee chairman.

The mention of new Democratic National Committee chair Tom Perez’s name at the tour stop in Portland Monday drew boos from the crowd, The Daily Caller reported.

“Regardless of why you showed up today, you showed up for a reason. Something compelled you to find the space and time to be here, and I want you to ask yourself what that reason is,” leader of the Maine Young Democrats, Claire Cummings, said speaking to the gathered crowd.

“Maybe it’s because you love a certain senator from Vermont,” she said, referring to Vermont Sen. Bernie Sanders.

The crowd cheered and began to chant  “Bernie, Bernie, Bernie.”

“Maybe you came though because you’re curious about the new DNC chairman and the future of the Democratic party,” Cummings then said, referring to Perez. But despite a few scattered cheers, the audience reacted with boos to the mention of his name.

The reaction seems in line with the ongoing divide within the Party since the presidential election campaign with as the split became deeper between moderate, pro-Hillary Clinton Democrats and left-wing, pro-Sanders progressives.

Perez was elected in February for the DNC chair over left-wing Bernie Sanders supporter, Minnesota Rep. Keith Ellison. In a speech last month, he painted a dismal picture for the Partydeclaring Democrats were suffering from a “crisis of relevance and a crisis of confidence.”

The former Obama labor secretary is seen by many in the party as being part of the Democratic establishment.

Perez and Sanders have embarked on a “Unity Tour” across the country in an effort to rebuild grassroots activism.

Perez continued his brand of speech-giving, peppering his remarks with profane language in an attempt to rouse the crowds and get applause. In Maine, he repeated his attack of President Trump and his efforts to repeal former President Obama’s signature healthcare law, using the same line from a speech in Newark, New Jersey,

“He didn’t want the Affordable Care Act branded after him. I don’t know what to call it. Trumpcare? Ryancare? I’ll tell you what I’d call it. I don’t care,” Perez said.

“Those Republican leaders and President Trump don’t give a sh** about the people they were trying to hurt,” he added, drawing applause.
