Rachel Maddow hijacks the news with promise she has Trump’s tax returns, and HE likely leaked them

Was it really a scoop?

MSMNC host Rachel Maddow released a copy of President Donald Trump’s 2005 federal tax returns Tuesday night.

Before her show aired, she breathlessly tweeted a promo, while at first omitting that they were from more than a decade ago.

“We’ve got Trump tax returns,” Maddow said. “(Seriously.)”

Network colleague Lawrence O’Donnell added that Maddow would be joining him on his own show immediately following Maddow’s, to discuss “the night we’ve all been waiting for.”

Maddow’s second tweet, posted nearly an hour after her first, owned up that the return was from 2005.

Finally, 9 p.m. Eastern arrived.

“What we have here is Donald Trump’s tax returns,” she said, waving a handful of documents for her TV viewers. “We have his federal tax returns for one year — for 2005.”

Then she announced that this was a first.

“I believe this is the only set of the president’s taxes that reporters have ever gotten ahold of,” she said.

Eventually, Maddow introduced her guest, David Cay Johnston, who actually received the tax forms. He indicated that he received the forms unsolicited in the mail, and could very well have been sent by the president himself.

Trump tweeted:

“It’s entirely possible that Donald sent this to me,” Johnson said. “Donald Trump has over the years leaked all sorts of things.”

In this case, Maddow’s “scoop” may have been scooped by the White House itself.

Here are the documents she revealed.
