TJ Maxx & Marshalls make anti-Ivanka moves, ignite backlash they might be next on Nordstrom bandwagon

T.J. Maxx and Marshalls have reportedly made moves signaling the retail chains may be next in line to dump first daughter Ivanka Trump’s line of women’s clothing and accessories.

Although the companies have stopped short of removing Ivanka’s merchandise from the floor, they nonetheless instructed employees to toss out special display items for her line, according to The New York Times.

Earlier this month Nordstrom announced that it would no linger carry the Ivanka Trump line of merchandise, and President Donald Trump blasted the retailer’s decision.

The Times reported:

“Effective immediately, please remove all Ivanka Trump merchandise from features and mix into” the racks where most products hang, the note read. “All Ivanka Trump signs should be discarded.”

The instruction was to eliminate special displays for the merchandise, “not to remove it from the sales floor,” said Doreen Thompson, a spokeswoman for the TJX Companies, the retailers’ parent corporation.

“We offer a rapidly changing selection of merchandise for our customers, and brands are featured based on a number of factors,” she said.

While not dumping Ivanka’s line completely, the merchandise will be much harder to find mixed in with everything else on the floor. An employee with several years experience told the Times it was the first time they had been instructed to throw away signs.

Shannon Coulter, co-founder of #GrabYourWallet, a campaign to boycott Trump products, didn’t appear surprised.

“I think they all have probably been looking closely at Ivanka’s sales numbers and weighing whether they’re worth all the problems she’s brought them,” he told The Times.

Still, one has to wonder, in this age of dwindling sales figures at brick-and-mortar retail stores, how can ticking off half the country ever be considered a wise marketing decision?

The backlash has already begun:
