A lot of people didn’t see this coming.
MSNBC announced Thursday in a statement that former longtime Fox News favorite Greta Van Susteren will join the network in a new weeknight show beginning Monday, January, 9, from 6:00 to 7:00 p.m. Eastern.
As well-loved as Van Susteren is, not everyone was happy with the move.
MSNBC president Phil Griffin said that the new show, which will air from Washington, D.C., will be called “For the Record with Greta,” similar to her former FNC show, “On the Record.” MSNBC announced:
“For the Record” will provide news coverage and analysis of the day’s top headlines spanning politics and beyond. The early evening broadcast will build on MSNBC’s strategic shift to a breaking news focus during the day and, along with “MTP Daily” and “Hardball,” will provide one of the key bridges to primetime. MSNBC marked its most-watched year ever in 2016, and was the fastest growing top 100 cable network in weekday prime.
“Greta is a true pro with a proven record of tough journalism,” said Griffin. “Her broad range of experience and sharp news judgment will be of great value to MSNBC as we build on our momentum going into a new year and a new administration.”
“I’m thrilled to start my next chapter at MSNBC,” Van Susteren said. “The network is the right destination for the smart news and analysis I hope to deliver every day, and I look forward to joining the talented journalists and analysts I respect there.”
MSNBC was also “thrilled” with the move.
We’re thrilled to welcome @greta to @MSNBC. Don’t miss #ForTheRecord beginning Monday at 6pET on MSNBC https://t.co/wD6GLfuX7f pic.twitter.com/vsNvgTmESS

But one group not so “thrilled” was the minuscule but loyal core of MSNBC viewers. Van Susteren, they believed, was not one of “them,” and they were outraged that she would be joining the network’s cadre of left-wing loons such as Al Sharpton, Chris Matthews and Rachel Maddow.
@MSNBC @greta As a long time viewer of MSNBC, I can tell you this isn’t the change I want to see. Will not watch Greta,Joe or Megan.

@MSNBC @greta You are screwing your base, @maddow @amjoyshow @chrislhayes @Lawrence are all that’s worth watching anymore.

@MSNBC @greta Well, I will be THRILLED to NEVER watch the show. In fact, this may be the point at which I stop watching MSNBC.

@MSNBC @greta no thanks. She is a fox news propagandist. Real news is what we need. No fake bullshit.

Others saw right through the outrage and stuck up for Van Susteren, who had gained a reputation for seeing right through BS whether it came from the left or the right — the epitome of “fair and balanced.”
@trustthetruth16 @MSNBC @greta You watch MSNBC for “real news”? OMG, the stupid, it burns!!

@vinnycruces @MSNBC @greta MSDNC trying to get more than 10 viewers!

@MSNBC @greta this is beyond disappointing. Are you trying to become another Faux News aka Trump News?
I will stop watching MSNBC— Andrea Manea (@andrea_manea) January 5, 2017
“A 25-year cable news veteran, Van Susteren joins MSNBC from Fox News Channel, where she hosted ‘On the Record with Greta Van Susteren’ for 14 years,” the network’s statement said. “Previously, Van Susteren spent more than a decade at CNN, where she served as a legal analyst and co-host of “Burden of Proof” and hosted the news program “The Point.” She is an experienced breaking news anchor and has traveled the world – including Afghanistan, Iraq, Pakistan, North Korea, Sudan, and more – often with Presidents, Secretaries of State and Defense, and other leaders.

But MSNBC’s viewers apparently prefer propaganda over professionalism.
