‘Totally Mariah’s screw-up,’ source says; new details and how she’s calling on dead Dick Clark for backup

The blame game continues in Mariah Carey’s diva drama as sources revealed that her disastrous New Year’s Eve performance was her own fault.

“I’m of the opinion that Dick Clark would not have let an artist go through that and he would have been as mortified as I was in real time,” Carey told Entertainment Weekly on Tuesday, breaking her silence about the night that left her looking clueless to an audience of millions on television and in New York’s Times Square.

“It’s not going to stop me from doing a live event in the future. But it will make me less trusting of using anyone outside of my own team,” she added.

After allegedly facing technical issues that had the superstar pacing the stage and checking her earpiece, Carey’s team accused Dick Clark Productions of sabotage and demanded a formal apology. The production company fired back, calling the accusation “defamatory, outrageous and frankly absurd.”

“It was totally [Carey’s] screw-up,” a source close to the production told Page Six .”Her assistant came out for the sound check, not her. All her dancers were in step. Everybody else onstage heard the track. Even without [the earpiece] there were eight speakers onstage. It was not the sound people.”

Page Six reported:

A second source at the rehearsal added: “The sound check was about 20 minutes. A stand-in did the whole routine with the mike. Mariah was on the side of the stage, and at the very end — no more than four seconds — she goes up and goes, ‘La-da-dee-da . . . Everything sounds great. Love you, New York,’ and left.”

The first source said of the live show, “She was like a lost puppy . . . She wasn’t even standing where she was supposed to . . . There was no [production] reason she couldn’t do it.” The source said performers were to play at Planet Hollywood afterwards, but that while the others showed up for the private gig, Carey did not.

Jenny McCarthy, who co-hosted the live event along with Ryan Seacrest, agreed that Carey did not do a proper sound check before the live event.

“Mariah didn’t do a sound check. She did whatever you would call like a dance move rehearsal holding her gold microphone, and she stood off to the side of the stage while she had a stand-in do a sound check,” McCarthy said Tuesday on her Sirius XM show, according to Page Six.

“I think Mariah was nervous as hell. I think she chose really tough songs to try to sing along with. I think ‘Emotions,’ that song, I mean her voice is not there anymore. I don’t think there is a problem with her inner ears. I just don’t. I think she used it as an excuse,” McCarthy added.

Representatives for the artist denied McCarthy’s claims.
