Austrian minister calls for ban on distributing the Koran

Austria’s interior minister is calling for an immediate Koran distribution ban on the streets to stop Salafist groups from radicalizing individuals.

Austria’s Interior Minister Sebastian Kurz said the law needs to change to stop Salafist campaigns from handing out fake copies with the intention of radicalizing and possibly recruiting people to terror groups.

“Salafist campaigns [are] an expression of political Islam, which we can longer tolerate,” Kurz said, according to The Local.

Authorities have recently tried to shut down several distribution campaigns. The radical Islamists have moved from area to area, which makes it hard to put an end to the illegal distribution.

Kurz’s proposal comes after German authorities raided nearly 200 mosques, apartments and offices across 10 states Tuesday to shut down a Salafist group connected to Islamic State. (RELATED: Germany Carries Out 200 Simultaneous Raids Against Islamists)

The raids targeted the “True Religion” group for spreading a particularly conservative translation of the Koran. The network is active in at least 16 countries.

“We don’t want terrorism in Germany… and we don’t want to export terrorism,” Interior Minister Thomas de Maiziere said during a press conference.
