Fox News host Bill O’Reilly accused Donald Trump of “undermining” the American electoral system with his insistence that the election process is rigged.
O’Reilly, who has been friends with Trump for many years, said the Republican presidential nominee’s talk is “not a patriotic thing.”
“The vote cannot be possibly rigged two weeks from tonight,” he said in his “Talking Points Memo” on “The O’Reilly Factor” on Tuesday.
“And Mr. Trump should accept whatever happens at that vote, unless there’s compelling evidence of corruption. Undermining our electoral system is not a patriotic thing,” he said.
O’Reilly noted that though this has been “the nastiest presidential race in history,” it is also “virtually impossible for the actual vote tally to be rigged” despite the billionaire businessman’s belief to the contrary.
But the Fox News host did agree with Trump that the system is stacked against him in issues with the mainstream media and the justice system.
“On the media front, there’s no question Americans are not getting objective reporting generally speaking,” O’Reilly said. “That’s because so many journalists are committed to the left, so many Republicans and conservative candidates face rigged coverage.”
“Also, there is growing evidence that our justice system has been compromised. Because Hillary Clinton is right in the middle of that, a case can be made that the election had been rigged in her favor,” he continued, citing a recent story about top Hillary Clinton ally Virginia Gov. Terry McAuliffe’s PAC giving a nearly $700,000 campaign contribution to the wife of an FBI official in charge of Clinton’s private email server investigation.
“If your wife is getting $675,000 from one of Hillary Clinton’s closest friends, you don’t investigate Hillary Clinton,” O’Reilly said. “The appearance of corruption is staggering.”
Though not saying there actually was corruption, O’Reilly noted that “the optics are awful and FBI Director James Comey had to know that.”
The conservative commentator reiterated again that the election could not be rigged as Trump purports, but did acknowledge the obvious problems that exist.
“But overall, if you don’t think the federal political and justice system has severe problems,” he said, “you are living in the Land of Oz.”
