Perhaps the best harbinger that Sunday night’s presidential debate was going to be a slugfest was when the two candidates were introduced — neither Republican Donald Trump nor Democrat Hillary Clinton made the slightest move to offer a handshake.
It was also an indication of how rapidly the campaigns have devolved in recent weeks when each curtly nodded to the another and a few “hellos” were said — but there was nothing more.

However, things were a bit more cordial between the hopeful first spouses. Melania Trump and Bill Clinton shook hands before the opening rounds of the debate, and Clinton did the same with Trump children Ivanka, Donald Jr. and Eric Trump.
