Fox News Channel’s Megyn Kelly came to the defense of Matt Lauer amid harsh criticism he has been under for how he handled the presidential forum.
Lauer, who moderated NBC’s Commander-in-Chief Forum on Wednesday, has been slammed for being too soft on Donald Trump while hammering Hillary Clinton about her email scandal.
Kelly defended her friend whom she said “doesn’t get enough credit for the tough questions he asks.”
“You can’t win in this election,” Kelly said Thursday on “The Kelly File. “You can’t win, especially with, all due respect to our brethren, the left-wing press, because they want to see you kill Trump. And if you try and throw too much shade at Hillary, then they want to kill you.”
Howard Kurtz, who joined Kelly and Bill Burton, agreed saying that moderators “are big, fat targets these days.”
“Matt Lauer did a solid job,” Kurtz, who hosts Fox News’ “Media Buzz,” said. He added that lot of the liberal media criticism is partisan from people who dislike Trump and think Lauer “should have smashed him to smithereens.”
Burton, however, felt that NBC could have picked someone better to moderate the forum and that Lauer’s performance was uneven. Burton, a former deputy White House press secretary, noted that Lauer’s hard-line questioning of Clinton was not the problem, but the fact that he did not grill Trump in the same way.
“It was uneven,” Burton said. “The performance lacked what I think the American people needed to make a fair assessment of who would be a better commander-in-chief.”
