Republican National Committee Chairman Reince Priebus was raked over the coals after attempting to criticize Hillary Clinton.
Priebus slammed the Democratic presidential nominee in a tweet on Wednesday because she seemed angry and did not smile during the “Commander in Chief” forum hosted by NBC.
@HillaryClinton was angry + defensive the entire time – no smile and uncomfortable – upset that she was caught wrongly sending our secrets.
— Reince Priebus (@Reince) September 8, 2016
But instead of inspiring additional criticism of Clinton, Priebus became the target as he was blasted on social media. The Clinton campaign responded to his tweet with one of their own.
Actually, that’s just what taking the office of President seriously looks like. https://t.co/Pyn92mesom

Clinton’s communications director, Jennifer Palmieri, also slammed Priebus for his comment.
People. Reince actually said HRC needed to smile more. This is real. https://t.co/6p3gP3IJz9

“The fact that the only criticism they could have for Hillary Clinton is that she didn’t smile enough at a very serious forum on our veterans, on our national security and on the job of commander in chief just tells you everything you need to know,” Clinton’s campaign manager, Robby Mook, said Thursday on ABC’s “Good Morning America.”

The response from other Twitter users was not what Priebus was looking for, and not what his Party needed.

.@Reince Nothing says “our party has no clue how to be relevant anymore” like its chair evaluating a Presidential candidate based on smiles.

@Reince @HillaryClinton Yes, tell the soon to be Commander in Chief she needs to smile more. Have you ever even been to the Internet before?

Douchebag @Reince making me do what I thought was impossible – defend @HillaryClinton against a sexist “Smile Sweetie” bush-league hit.

There were some occasional moments of clarity, however, and social media provided the platform for many to battle out their reactions to the comment by Priebus.

@BruceGodfrey @Reince I, for 1, am glad @HillaryClinton didn’t smile. It showed her to be the angry, defensive crow that she is.
