‘Am I not speaking English?’ AP reporter finally gets fed up with obstinate State Dept. spox

This week’s biggest news story was the release of State Department emails indicating Hillary Clinton, while serving as secretary of state, performed favors for large donors to the Clinton Foundation.

Those 44 emails were clearly a priority to the members of the press gathered at Wednesday’s State Department briefing, but not so much to Elizabeth Trudeau, the State Department spokeswoman who repeatedly dodged questions from NBC News’ Abigail Williams.

“Department officials are in touch with a wide range of individuals. I’d note that former Secretary Clinton’s ethics agreement did not preclude other State Department officials from having contact with Clinton Foundation staff,” was all Trudeau would say.

Then Associated Press reporter Matt Lee took a stab at it.

“Can you at least try to answer Abigail’s question, which was ‘has the department looked into this and determined that there was no impropriety?’” he asked at about the 2:08 mark.

But no, that didn’t work either.

“The department is regularly in touch with people across the whole spectrum, Matt,” she responded.

Lee continued to push the question without success, telling Trudeau that “the question was whether the building has looked into it and determined that everything is OK, that there was nothing wrong.”

But the spokeswoman wouldn’t budge from her talking points.

“We feel confident in our ability and our past practice of reaching out to a variety of sources and being responsive,” Trudeau said.

Lee finally got exasperated and brought his frustration to the surface.

“Am I not speaking English? I mean, is it coming across as a foreign [language]?” he shot back.

“I’m not asking you if — no one is saying it’s not OK or it’s bad for the department to get a broad variety of input from different people. Asking — the question is whether or not you have determined that there was nothing improper here.”
