The chances of House Speaker Paul Ryan being upset in his primary against businessman Paul Nehlen are slim if the latest poll conducted by Remington Research Group is correct.
The survey, released Friday, shows a whopping 80 percent of those polled would support Ryan, while just 14 percent said they would vote for his primary challenger.
Despite Nehlen’s constant praise of Trump’s policies, just 16 percent said they had a favorable opinion of the candidate while 47 percent had an unfavorable outlook despite Trump receiving a 52 percent favorability rating. In contrast, 80 percent said they had a positive opinion of the speaker of the House, while just 14 percent disliked Ryan.
It appears Trump’s hesitation to endorse Ryan hasn’t had a negative impact on the incumbent’s popularity in Wisconsin’s 1st Congressional District ahead of the August 9 primary.
The GOP presidential nominee recently thanked Nehlen for supporting his policies via social media and complimented him for running “a very good campaign” during an interview with The Washington Post.
Trump is reportedly expected to endorse Ryan at a campaign rally in Green Bay, Wisc., Friday evening.
The survey was conducted on August 3 using the answers from 1,157 likely 2016 Republican primary election voters and leaves a margin of error of plus or minus 3 percent.
