CNN host Fareed Zakaria isn’t shy about voicing his disdain for Donald Trump on air.
On Monday, while discussing Trump’s weekend interview with ABC’s George Stephanopoulos during which he was perceived to be ignorant of the fact that Russian President Vladimir Putin has already seized Crimea, Zakaria compared Trump’s methods to those of a “bullshit artist.”
“Every time it is demonstrated that Donald Trump is plainly ignorant about some basic public policy issue, some well-known fact, he comes back with a certain bravado and tries to explain it away with a tweet or a statement. He did it on Brexit. He did it on the nuclear triad. He did it really on how U.S. debt markets work. He thought that Tim Kaine was the governor of New Jersey. And now with this,” Zakaria said.
“It’s sort of amusing to watch — how’s he going to pull it off this time?” he said. “What is he going to argue? Usually he adds that the press hates him. But there’s a term for this kind of thing. This is the mode of a bullshit artist. Such antics can be amusing, it’s entertaining if the guy is trying to sell you a condo or a car, but for President of the United States it’s deeply worrying.”
Zakaria was likely referring to Trump’s clarifications on Twitter:
Despite the media’s blathering, Trump, of course, wasn’t unaware of the fact that Russia has seized Crimea. How do we know for certain? How about the fact that he criticized Putin for it back in 2014, or when he talked about it last July, or even three months ago?
Did Trump suddenly forget something he’s talked about in public numerous times, or is this whole Crimea issue a big, silly misunderstanding?
So the real question is, who’s the real “bullshit artist?”
