Hillary’s shortlist for Supreme Court justices surfaces–one of Obama’s favorites makes the cut

So far, Democratic presidential nominee Hillary Clinton hasn’t followed the lead of her Republican counterpart by naming her Supreme Court choices if she were to be elected president.

While Donald Trump announced 11 names who are on his shortlist in May, the former secretary of state has only said that the Senate should confirm President Obama’s appointee to fill the vacancy left by the late Justice Antonin Scalia — Judge Merrick Garland.

Although Clinton has so far refused to announce possible high court appointees, those close to her say that her picks are evident, according to The Hill.

None of those close to her were willing to speakl on the record due to “the sensitivities surrounding the issue.” However, they were nonetheless willing to offer their opinions and beliefs on condition of anonymity.

All were pretty much in agreement that Clinton’s number-one choice would be Garland — Obama’s appointee.

Because Garland has already passed the FBI background checks required of Supreme Court appointees and passed the scrutiny of the American Bar Association, Garland is an obvious choice.

He’s already acquainted with many high court justices as a member of the U.S. Court of Appeals for the Washington D.C. circuit.

The Hill reported:

Other top contenders for a Clinton appointment would be Sri Srinivasan, a judge on the D.C. Circuit Court of Appeals and Jane Kelly, a judge on the Eighth Circuit Court of Appeals. The Obama White House reportedly considered both judges this year before the president nominated Garland.

Srinivasan’s appointment would both please and displease the left.

Although he would be the first Hindi of Indian descent appointed to the high court, his time in private practice defending major corporations such as Exxon Mobil would scare liberals away.

Ninth Circuit Court of Appeals Judge Paul Watford, an African-American, is also mentioned as a possible Clinton appointee.

Judge Paul Watford, an African-American, is also mentioned as a possible Clinton appointee.

And, like Judge Srinivasan (in the interest of diversity), Vietnamese-American Judge Jacqueline Nguyen’s name was mentioned. Both she and Wartford sit on the 9th Circuit Court of Appeals.

Asian-American California Supreme Court Justice Goodwin Liu was also named. A former University of California-Berkeley law professor, Liu’s nomination to the 9th Circuit Court of Appeals was blocked by conservatives.

The greatest fear of a Clinton presidency among conservatives is that she may pack the court with liberal justices.

“It’s that simple, a Hillary Clinton Supreme Court means your right to own a firearm is gone,” Chris Cox, the executive director of the National Rifle Association’s Institute for Legislative Action, said, according to The Hill.
