Parents erupt over Victoria Beckham kissing her daughter — but is it inappropriate?

Victoria Beckham unleashed a social media firestorm after posting a photo for her daughter’s birthday.

Beckham along with her soccer star husband David shared photos with their daughter Harper who turned five on Sunday. But it was the photo of a birthday kiss from mom to her daughter that had parents in an uproar.

“Happy Birthday baby girl. We all love you so much X kisses from mummy X” read the caption on the photo Beckham posted to her Instagram account.

The photo earned nearly 600,000 likes on Instagram while igniting thousands of comments.

“Eww sorry I’m old fashioned it looks like they making out,” said one Instagram user. “It’s nice but you’re not supposed to kiss your children on the lips. I’m not trying to be rude but it’s true,” wrote another.

Not all comments about the 42-year-old fashion designer’s photo were negative however, with many coming to Beckham’s defense.

“The fact that so many people sexualize a photo of a mother with her child is so disgusting. This is a beautiful photo and there is absolutely nothing wrong with it,” one comment said.

“It’s a frightening day when we live in a world where a parent kissing a child is classed as wrong! What kind of messed up planet is this? She’s a fantastic mother and obviously loves her kids immensely!” another person wrote. “There’s plenty of things shared on social media which are ‘disgusting’ however, the unconditional love between a child and parent is certainly NOT one!”

The social media debate caught the attention of BBC News which consulted a social etiquette expert.

“Normally with a member of your family you don’t kiss on the lips unless it’s your husband,” Liz Brewer told BBC. “With children, I wouldn’t have thought it’s a particularly good habit to get into but it’s her child and she’s at liberty to do what she thinks is best.”

“I would be uncomfortable doing that and I think most people would be. If she feels it’s appropriate, so be it. I wouldn’t say it sets a particularly good example,” Brewer said.

The negative comments on the photo were quickly overtaken by thousands of positive ones as parents began to post photos of themselves kissing their children.

I find it deeply upsetting that people are now being abused for publicly showing their child love and affection. I will never ever stop showering my child with affection, they are a precious gift and one that should be treasured every day. I only hope that @victoriabeckham is standing proud and posts another 100 picture of her kissing Harper #motherslove #kissyourchildren #kissyourkids #love #victoriabeckham ????????????
