For one Washington man, standing by while a toddler was brutally beaten was not an option.
Don Gilbert did not think twice about jumping in to stop the assault of a two year-old girl at a motel he was staying in, KPTV reported.
Gilbert grabbed a baseball bat when he heard screaming around 9 p.m. from his room at the Sunnyside Motel in Vancouver. According to witnesses, Kyle Holder, 32, had thrown his two year-old daughter out of their motel window onto the cement walkway after picking her up from the bed. He allegedly beat and kicked her in the parking lot.
Holder reportedly picked up the toddler again, threw her on the ground several times and began stomping on her head, court documents stated.
At this point, Gilbert intervened and saved the child’s life, according to KPTV.
“I hit him once in the back. He had the baby by her feet,” Gilbert said. “He took her to the curb and just slammed her down, and that’s when I cracked him in the skull three or four times.”
Deputies were forced to use a Taser on Holder as he was allegedly out of control when they arrived.
“I did not want to kill her, but I had to. I had to hold my daughter and crush her head so she could go up to the sky,” Holder said after being taken into custody, according to court documents.
A complaint earlier in the day about Holder had not led to any arrests by deputies who had investigated, KPTV reported. Gilbert had noticed then that the man was acting strangely.
“He was just babbling about God’s coming for everyone and he’s got to get the evil out of his daughter,” Gilbert said.
Holder faces first degree attempted murder charges and is being held in jail while his daughter is in critical condition at a local hospital, according to KPTV.
Gilbert will not likely face any charges, officials said, and the man does not want to be called a hero.
“The question is, why wouldn’t somebody do this?” he said. “If more people took time to care less about themselves and more about innocent people, we wouldn’t have the crap going on in the world we do now.”
