Bloody melee: 400 anarchists in black masks fight white nationalists – 10 stabbed, multiple beatings

Ten people were stabbed, two critically, after a Sacramento, California white nationalist demonstration outside the California state Capitol building turned violent on Sunday.

The small group of neo-Nazi protesters that included about 30 members of the Traditionalist Worker Party (TWP) were met by around 400 counter-protesters. “I don’t think there was any verbal exchange, just full on fight,” California Highway Patrol Officer George Granada told the Los Angeles Times. He also confirmed that as of Sunday afternoon no arrests had been made.

The Capitol building remained on lockdown three hours after the fight. California Assemblyman Jim Cooper told the LA Times that Capitol employees took refuge inside the building’s basement during the melee.

It wasn’t entirely clear which group had the most wounded, but one neo-Nazi broadcasted online that “they got one of ours but we got six of theirs.” TWP chairman Matthew Heimbach confirmed that one of their protesters had been stabbed in an artery and six “anti-fascists” had also been stabbed.

Cooper noted that the protesters “came ready to fight,” as a large number were carrying sticks and running around.

An hour later most of the demonstrators had left and police had cordoned off the area. Local reports said police dispersed the demonstrators with tear gas and pepper spray.

Both demonstrations were organized well in advance, the TWP having received a permit for a noon protest in front of the Capitol building.

The TWP, which organized the demonstration along with the neo-Nazi group the Golden State Skinheads, blame “leftist radicals” for instigating the fight, according to Vice chairman Matt Parrott, who wasn’t at the rally.

The violence was intense and continued in different places as the groups dispersed. Footage from the clashes show people being dragged, kicked, and punched. The Daily Mail reports that one piece of footage shows a man with long hair getting up off the grass then getting hit in the head with a bat by another masked man. ABC10 reporter Frances Wang Tweeted about “blood spatters all over the ground. Police trying to control crowds.”

Wang also recorded harrowing video of people running towards each other before the attack and also the police stepping in to protect someone from being attacked.

The TWP describes itself on its website as, “America’s first political party created by and for working families. Our mission is defending faith, family, and folk against the politicians and oligarchs who are running America into the ground. We intend to achieve that goal by building a nationwide network of grassroots local leaders who will lead Americans toward a peaceful and prosperous future free from economic exploitation, federal tyranny, and anti-Christian degeneracy.”

According to a post on the TWP website, the marched was planned to protest against globalization and for their right to free expression. They also expected to be tremendously outnumbered. “We concluded that it was time to use this rally to make a statement about the precarious situation our race is in. With our folk on the brink of becoming a disarmed, disengaged, and disenfranchised minority, the time to do something was yesterday!”
