Bill Kristol’s nefarious scheme to place a doppelganger in the Oval Office, or foil the Trump campaign, or be relevant, or something, is coming off about as lame as a typical Dr. Heinz Doofenshmirtz plot to “conquer the entire Tri-State area” on the hit Disney cartoon “Phineas and Ferb.”
Remember Kristol’s ominous Tweet from a couple of days ago, the one where he told the world, “Just a heads up over this holiday weekend: There will be an independent candidate–an impressive one, with a strong team and a real chance.”
I mean, I’ve known Kristol was an irrelevant neocon hackjob for much longer than I’ve been on the Trump train, but even I got just a teensy bit worried about this one. Did the “Weekly Standard” editor have some big name from out of nowhere like Colin Powell up his sleeve? Maybe he finally convinced Mark Cuban to derail Trump. Or maybe Mitt Romney switched gears and decided his lame effort in 2012 didn’t do enough damage to the country.
Who did Kristol have? Why was he so smug? (other than the fact that he always looks that way)
Well, it looks like we finally have our answer.
Drum roll please…
Kristol’s white knight is… is…
David French
David who, you ask?
David French, constitutional lawyer, Iraq war veteran and Bronze Star recipient, and … National Review writer with strong anti-Trump credentials. To get a flavor, here’s what French wrote of the Trump movement in March, “The party of Lincoln is in ruins. A minority of its primary voters have torched its founders’ legacy by voting for a man who combines old-school Democratic ideology, a bizarre form of hyper-violent isolationism, fringe conspiracy theories and serial lies with an enthusiastic flock of online racists to create perhaps the most toxic electoral coalition since George Wallace.”
In other words, another first-rate douchebag.
For an example of where the general public seems to be on this, judging by the majority of comments under their French coverage, even The Blaze readers seem to be fed up with this nonsense, and most of them have been strongly anti-Trump all along.
Bloomberg has reported that French is strongly considering a run but doesn’t have a VP in mind nor has he lined up financial support (anyone want to throw away some money??). They apparently beat everyone to the punch on this by obtaining Kristol’s article in the upcoming Weekly Standard …
In Kristol’s piece in the Standard’s June 6 issue, he argued that “the fact of Trump’s and Clinton’s unfitness for the Oval Office has become so self-evident that it’s no longer clear one needs a famous figure to provide an alternative.” After mentioning Mitt Romney and other possibilities such as Judd Gregg and Mel Martinez, Kristol invoked French’s name and résumé, writing, “To say that he would be a better and a more responsible president than Hillary Clinton or Donald Trump is to state a truth that would become self-evident as more Americans got to know him.”
Nobody, not Bill Kristol, not Mitt Romney (who just said good things about French), not even Dr. Heinz Doofenshmirtz thinks French has a shot at actually winning the Presidency. Now, could he pull enough Trump votes in swing States to allow a Democratic victory in November? Probably not, but Kristol and other #NeverTrumpers certainly hope so. It won’t happen, but here’s to hoping Kristol and “conservatives” like him have a moment of clarity and just admit to the nation that they actually desire a Hillary Clinton Presidency.
Naturally, Twitter was abuzz with reaction:
Kristol's pick! https://t.co/XzgyOC0Qb7 That would be the same David French who defended Kevin Williamson? https://t.co/G6kMwtaTzR

My sense is much of the commentary isn't really about David French. More about implausibility of choice after so much hype.

And finally…
I hope David French and Elizabeth Warren both jump in as third party candidates. Then we can call it the “French and Indian War.”
