Sen. Ted Cruz said that the media is sitting on an explosive piece of information harmful to Republican presidential front-runner Donald Trump that it will release at a time when it would be most damaging to the party.

He made his claim on CBS News’ “Face The Nation” Sunday.

“I think an awful lot of reporters — I can’t tell you how many media outlets I hear, you know, have this great exposé on Donald, on different aspects of his business dealings or his past, but they said, ‘You know what? We’re going to hold it to June or July,'” Cruz told host John Dickerson at about 4:25 into the interview.

“We’re not going to run it now.”

Earlier into the interview Cruz noted that the media helped create the Trump “phenomenon” by providing his campaign “hundreds of millions of dollars of free advertising.”

They do this knowing that Trump cannot beat Democratic front-runner Hillary Clinton. The last CNN head-to-head poll showed the real estate developer coming out the loser against both Clinton and Sen. Bernie Sanders.

“Hillary would wallop him,” Cruz said.

“Donald may be the only person on the face of the planet that Hillary Clinton can beat.”
